Never thought of this before - AWD?
« on: August 17, 2011 - 12:21:49 PM »
Just in theory, with a reworked front clip, or something like an Alterkation setup, and well-designed and installed subframe connectors, could you pull the entire AWD setup from a 300 and plop it into an ebody?

I am sure it could be done , how hard is the question , you will need some fabrication to make it work !!

If you've never had the pleasure of owning an AWD drive vehicle, having a tire go flat and running the spare, you'll know why no one else has tried this either...AWD drive sounds trick until the unit goes bad...Not to mention the fact that your once fairly light (3500 LB) E-body from the early 70's now is a porker @ over 4000 LBS...

Had a Customer come in the shop for a slow leak in one of his tires. Found a bolt sticking out the sidewall, can't repair it...So, I installed his spare and sent him on his way until he could get a tire. Came back about 5 min later saying it was making a horrible noise. Test drove, sure enough, making one helluva noise. Reinstalled his leaking tire, noise went away. Told him to get a tire. Came back in about 1 hour later with same noise as before...
Test drove AGAIN only to hear the same noise. Only thing I could tell him was to try replacing ALL 4 Tires at once. Dude thought I was crazy...Came back in the next day with all 4 new tires and no noise.....AWD sucks nowadays..

A local DJ was talking about exactly the same thing yesterday morning. That wouldn't happen to be Kirk McEwen's car, would it?

Summit Racing built an AWD' 32 Ford way back in the early 90s. Quadra Duece, I believe. I think Chip Foose even had a hand in it. Was a cool build to read about, but once completed, kinda fall off the radar and is hard to get info on. They did drive it, but I don't beleive it was ever driven exceedingly hard, and most its life was spent as a fairgrounds cruiser.

Yes, it is a neat idea that could yield decent performance, but it certainly would come with considerable expense, work, and potantial pitfalls.

I wonder how hard it would be with the new Challenger with an AWD system from a new Charger/300?  All LX based...  :dunno:  (Dave, I'm assuming you are initially talking about an old Challenger, yes?  :clueless: )

You are assuming correctly, Phil, I was talking about an ebody. My guess is that with the LX Challenger. Still a lot of work required, but significantly less.

Hey Brad, did you see the guy at Moparfest who installed the complete undercarriage/driveline from a new Charger into his 68 Charger body? I couldn't believe it, it looked factory and the guys a farmer, seriously. Some people just amaze me with their talent.
