I'm with burdar I much rather see an year of Manufacture plate on a car. Here in ontario they are super easy to come by. There is a guy not to far from my house that runs a small business selling ontario YOM plates.

unfortunatelly for me, in ontario, they stopped making YOM plates in 1973 so the technically correct plate for my car would be a 1973 plate with a 1974 sticker.

His prices aren't cheap either... http://www.kijiji.ca/v-cars-other/hamilton/yom-licence-plates-for-your-old-auto-ministry-guaranteed/1011567512?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true

From His Web Site...

"How much is getting YOM plates going to cost me? My plate prices vary-- you'll have to ask me. The average price is around $120. Then, you'll have to pay the MTO a fee of $251.65 to register the number to your name. Then, you'll have to buy your expiry sticker at your local MTO / ServiceOntario outlet. YOM plates do not have historic restrictions, so the sticker is full price. "

Here's mine, I run model year plates on all my cars. In Texas, it's a good deal less expensive to register. About $75 for the registration, and I got the plates of Ebay for $50 for the matched pair.

For those interested in restoring their originals:

There's a guy out here in Pleasanton that restores plates.
He powdercoats them back to their original color. I had mine done.
Very nice.

I think it was about 150 a plate.

I saw a plate in 1988 on the way to the Monsters of Rock concert in Alpine Valley that was "EACH IT".   I thought my side was going to bust when I realized what it actually said!  I don't think the DMV would allow it any more.  But it was really great to see.  Never forgot that one.

An older one I seen years ago at a local show in Washington State, Plum Crazy Hemi Challenger had  MY-IRA. That was an eye catcher, never seen the car again.

Remember that car at the coeur d Alene shows back in the early 90's

I asked the DMV and as long as I carry the state issued plates in the car(so if I'm pulled over, I can show the officer the state issued plate) I'm good.  Every state is different.  Some states don't allow repop plates.  They have to be old state issued plates.  Some states record the "year of manufacture" plate number.  Iowa does not.  I have a copy of the Iowa DOT code that allows these plates in the glove box.  Hopefully I'll never need to reference it.
Alberta is the same way for vehicles issued antique plates.

Mine,6PAK2GO was on my 69 R/T back in 89, now on my Cummins  :)
