Wanna talk ugly?, How bout those over the top/hood/trunk "SS" or "Gt40" type stripes Everybody and their brother is getting done...NO mopar ever came through that I remember with those...Only the brand X cars, yet I see 'em on Everything...At the very least, that decal is "Original"...

The first racing stripes were applied to high-performance prototype automobiles built as racecars by Briggs Cunningham and placed into competition as his motorsport team, beginning in 1951.[citation needed] Cunningham racecars usually carried two parallel blue stripes running from front to rear in the center of the white body so that spectators could identify the team's automobiles readily during races. The stripes often were called "Le Mans stripes" because of the repeated efforts of Cunningham to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans in France, where the French had a great affection for him. His tradition was soon adopted by other racing teams in many venues. Thereafter, the use of racing stripes soon became common in the 1960s and early 70s for both race and road cars.

Many automobile manufacturers soon decided that imitation of the Cunningham tradition could be profitable, and some "sportier" models of a manufacturer's range often featured stripes out of the factory (hence the derisive use of the term, go-faster).[3] The Cunningham tradition was followed by Carroll Shelby on his Cobra and some prototypes built as "Shelby" that sometimes were driven on the street in New Jersey.

The imitative trend continues—although striping has tended to become more subtle. In North America, owners of performance sport compact cars use a narrower version of the classic striping, similar to that of the Renault Clio Gordini.

In 1996 a pair of 8-inch wide stripes was used on the Dodge Viper GTS, starting a revival in Europe;[4] they are sometimes referred to as Viper Stripes.[4]

Purists call them Cunningham racing stripes, although the more generic American racing stripes also is used in Europe, because Cunningham epitomized the American motor-sportsman and racing car constructor. For three decades, Briggs Cunningham and his team were well known and extremely popular among spectators and racing professionals at European racing events.

This was Cut and Pasted from Wikipedia...

I think it says it best: American racing stripes.

What about the 71 Stripes on the new Challengers....The new Challengers have a 70 style grill. Therefore,  they should have a 70 style stripe.  :2cents:

I firmly believe that the 2008- current Challengers suffer from an huge Identity Crisis lol  , Lets see we have people making them into Roadrunners, ' Cuda's, Superbirds/Daytonas, Demons and now Torinos.
Poor Challenger has no idea what the heck it is.

I remember reading about the Cunninghams, used the early Chrysler Hemi for motors if I remember right.  And I totally agree neither Ford or Chevy 'owns' the double stripe look.  I thing the dark blue Challenger SRT8 with dual white stripes (like the early Viper GTS) is gorgeous.  I was looking at the 2013 Challenger website and unfortunately that color combo is not available... shame.

yeah,  the blue with white stripes and the white with blue stripes where only available for the 2011 model year.  They where billed as the "inaugural edition".  It was the first year for the 392 engine.
