Hypothetical engine build - cam and converter question
« on: August 28, 2011 - 09:03:02 PM »
What cam and convertor would you use (and why) if you were building a 360 engine with the following specs:

9:1 compression;
stock heads (good valve job but no porting);
edelbrock performer RPM intake; and
750 holley (vac secondary) carb.

The engine would be in a 74 cuda, with a 3:23 gears (28 inch tires).

the car would be used 100% on the street, crusing with the family and for trips out of town.

Just spit-balling ideas for a wither project.  :dunno:

For dragging kids around?  A comp 268H hydraulic flat tappet cam and a 1500-2000 rpm converter.  It would start easily, run no problem.  Give you good, low torque for driving around town.  Reliable all day for driving the fam around.

Better question is why you want to put a 750 cfm carb on top of a 383 with stock heads?

Even better question would be where do you see it's a 383 engine?

should be a great match with a stock converter, or up to 2200 or so.

What do we assume then?  Sounded like a car that would come with a 383.

If we assume his signature to be correct, then it would appear that a 360 is the correct assumption.  If he is building a new engine from scratch...then your assumption is as good as anyones

Ok, now that we all know it is a 360, I stick with the cam I linked above....for a 3.23 with taller tires which further reduce the gearing a bit, it should be a good, flat torque curve that works for cruising, and normal street driving.  If it was a bigger inch engine, or lower geared, I would choose the next cam up which is 268 at .050".

This one should work perfectly with 9-1 compression and your combo, imo :)

I would still say that since you plan on using unported stock heads, a 750 cfm carb is overboard for street use.  The ride would be much more street friendly with a 650/670 cfm carb.

You aren't planning on super/turbocharging it, are you?  Is the long block already together?

   :iagree:

If you just want a nice street machine, and aren't trying to get the most out of it...By all means look at a smaller carb.

use a vacuum secondary carb and eliminate the problem of size

Uhhh, no, no plans to super / turbocharged the engine.

Oh yeah the long block is together, hell its in my car runing today.

I am currently runing the following cam:

@050 Int dur. 222 , Ex dur. 234
Lift Int .447 Ex .450
Intake Centre line 107 Ex centerline 116.

The engine works, I have tuned the carb so there is no bog, but it is still not stong under 2500 rpm.  It is better withe RPM intale as opposed to the Torker II intake I had on last summer.

After a charity rally, around town over the weekend, I realized how bad the cam is for around town.  So I am just spit balling ideas for a possible winter cam change.

Thanks fro the input.
