Lower control arm outer sleeve?........................
« on: September 04, 2011 - 01:26:41 PM »
Hi all
Just a quick question.

Do I remove the outer sleeve............The sleeve the red arrow is pointing to.
Do they come with it when I get a new one?

I hope so, as I messed this one up already  :banghead:
Any help is always appreciated.
Thanks

no just the sleeve you have out , the rubber bushings have a new outer sleeve but if you use poly bushings you need to leave the part you removed in place

Thanks for the fast response Neil. Appreciate it man.

So what I am gathering is that the one one the left is correct, (for a poly setup),
the one on the right I screwed up nicely by grinding the outer sleeve off and too far into the "outer, outer" sleeve?

Right?

Wrong and I probably need a new lower control arm now?

That is correct , if you installed a new rubber bushing you might save the one you cut too deep into .

You shouldn't have a problem putting a standard bushing in the  1 with the damage.
The messed up area is a small percentage of the total bushing area.

even if you installed a new outer shell & used poly it should work , it seems to be away from the load side

I have said this before. Any one doing this job, buy the tool. http://www.americanmuscle.biz/23501_Lower_Control_Arm_Bushing_Sleeve_Remover_ABE_p/23501.htm
Sorry you messed yours up. I think you can still use that arm. Maybe fill in the area with some JB Weld or similar product if you are worried about it.

I agree with getting the tool.  I fought with the 1 side for 2 days.  Went ahead and bought the tool and had the 2nd one off in 1/2hr.

How much play should there be in the sleeve?  When I replaced mine one side I just took a screw driver and pushed out the rubber bushing.  But the other side the pin was stuck in it.  I took it to a machine shop and they just pressed it out.  Bushing came out with it.  But I have put the ploy's in and there just seems like alot of play when you grab the big round end of this thing.  I just don't know what normal is.

Where is this play? The bushing should be tight in the sleave. Did you leave the inner metal part on the pin? For the poly bushing both inner metal and the outer metal sleaves need to be there. They replace just the rubber. So if you are doing the poly bushings you do not remove either sleave and don't need the tool I linked to in the other post. I hope this made sence.

I left the inner sleave.  I didn't even know that had sleeves.  If you grab the opposite end where the torision bar goes into you can wiggle it.  I slid the pin in if you grab the pin or the end for the torision bar and wiggle it the other end is moving.  The adjuster in the center moves around to.  It just seems like alot of slop.  The other side seems to be snug and no movement.

This sounds ok. The 2 parts of the arm are sloppy. Once it is under load with the bars adjusted all that slop goes away. As long as the bushing is tight in the sleave and the pin tight in the bushing you're ok.

No problem at all Kevin.
Some take offense..................I don't mind where the thread subject matter ends up.
Some threads stay on the track and others get derailed into oblivion.
I've been guilty of both  :roflsmiley:
All good man
