727 squeal in reverse when cold.
« on: September 07, 2011 - 12:21:37 AM »
Hoping some can tell me what is causing my 727 to make a squealing noise in reverse when cold, it goes away after about 5 minutes & don't make the noise at all after it is warmed up, this is a 1970 tranny behind a 1970 383. & it was just completly rebuilt, It is filled with F type fluid per the rebuilders recomendation, the fluid level is dead on &  the tranny works perfect except for the annoying squeal.

Would like to get some ideas from guys on the board before I talk to the rebuilder. Thanks

It could be a valve "buzz" from air in the system from a slight internal leak. After it runs for 5 minutes it works itself out? I have never heard that before on a three speed, just the overdrives.

Terry thanks for the reply, is there a fix for this without removing from the car? I don't really want to drop it again, could it be leaking between the valve body & case?  Will it do any damage if I just ignore it & live with it?  Thanks Don.

If it isn't slipping, it shouldn't hurt a thing. It might even go away after some time. I wish I could hear what the noise sounds like. It isn't the dust cover rubbing the converter bolts is it?

Terry, It is not slipping at all, the shifts are very positive & firm, I will check the dust cover, the noise sounds like a whistling that changes volume with the rpm of the engine, I have about 450 miles on the tranny now, as long it is not damaging anything I'll keep driving it & see if it goes away.

Thanks very much for your help, Don
