New 440 carb problems please help
« on: September 08, 2011 - 06:16:21 PM »
I just bought a newly done 1973 challenger restomod with a 440 bored 4.75 all new with an electronic ignition and holley carb. The car starts easy, cruises well and wide open throttle is perfect. Except when the engine gets fully warmed up it wont idle when I pull up to a stop light. If I start it and let it idle in the driveway it idles perfect. If I throw it in neutral while rolling along at speed it idles perfect. If I drive along and come to any stop it stumbles and stalls. Any suggestions? Thank you :wow: :rebel:

It will idle when in drive. It only stalls when you are coming  to a stop

I had a BB Satellite that did the exact same thing. It turns out it wasn't anything to do with the carb. Torque converter was fried and pretty much locking the engine down. Replaced the torque converter and it ran like a top....    :rebel:

could be a vacuum drop problem when you e on the brakes , you may have a leak in the brake line or booster or a problem with the carb when the vacuum is dropped to low , what carb do you have ?

He has a Holley, but vacuum leak was my first thought.

You could try to spray some water around the base of your carb while it is idling. Notice if the RPM's change as you do this. Same for the intake gasket. My problem was under the carb.
