Bump Start Without a Battery?
« on: September 09, 2011 - 10:41:49 PM »
The battery for the Challenger is now in the boat as it's too hot to drive much this time of year. I switch it back in the cooler months but would like to keep her mobile just in case of an emergency like a wildfire or something. Maybe a dumb question but would an old school mopar with electronic ignition bump start with no battery though the cables connected? :clueless:

A mopar will run without a battery. The alternator will self-excite but your battery provides a load and reference voltage to keep the voltage from going sky high. I once let my car idle while I pulled the battery out to start another car. All of the light were on. (70 Challenger, about 16 bulbs)  I looked at the car and all the lights were off and car was still running. It blew out every single light bulb.  I had to drive home with brights on and nothing else.

I always have a good WalMart 9 year battery in my cars with a ground disconnect post on the Neg terminal. Turn the knob, start the car, get away from the wildfire.    Just like a fire extinguisher. Why only have one for the house and the garage when you can afford to have one in each spot.

I believe no you can't.  You need to have the initial voltage to create
the spark. After it's running you could remove the cables with
the above stated issues, assuming that the alternator is working.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

It appears unreasonable to assume it would run by bump starting it down the driveway but thought it worth a shot. Having unregulated voltage could start a fire in the car by itself.

The reason for asking is every year we get dry lightning and that has been going on the past few days. Very unnerving as it's been in the upper 90's all summer and everything is so dry.

Guess I'll pickup another good battery and tender for the Challenger so that it's  ready to go at a moments notice.

 :iagree:
you need to have a battery or at least booster cables to get it started initially
