14" or 15" wheels - which is preferred?
« on: January 08, 2005 - 09:57:51 AM »
I am about to invest time and money in restoring my 14" rallyes. I continue to see more E-body owners running 15" wheels/tires. What are the advantages to this? Is it just a "look" preference or are their economic and handling benefits as well?

I believe my 72' Cuda came with 14" rallyes originally and would like to know why the 15" wheel seems to be preferred?

the same height of tire with larger wheels will handle better , you will also find a better selection of 15 tires available

A way to look at what Psycho is saying, anytime you can reduce the sidewall you will improve your handling by improving the response.  The trade off is that you don’t have as much tire to cushion the bumps.  In my opinion the 15 is the way to go if you are wanting to keep the car more like an original. (Plus, I like the look of the 15 over the 14  :grinyes:)  You aren’t going to loose that much comfort as you would going to a 17 or larger wheel.  Plus, as Psycho also pointed out, there are a lot of options for tires to fit a 15inch wheel.

I had a different car that I swapped 14" to 15" and it was night and day!
Just handled so much better.
That is the reason why now myself I'm pondering a bigger wheel.

looks like lots of guys are selling their 14" rallyes right now. Has anyone got pics of a car with 14" and a car with 15" to actually see the difference?

Like Chryco said, my biggest problem was there were only a few makes of tires avalible and only a few sizes. One being made by Dunlop and one by BF Goodrich. You can get the 15's from many other makers...so I went with 15" rallyes..

15x? All around? I guess you have the popular set up of 255/60/15x8" Rear and 235/60/15x7 Front.  :grinyes: 8)

NZ I actually went conservative and used 15 X 7's and 235/60/15 all around. For my White Chally I'm gonna use 245/60/15 all around..
