Internal Voltage Regulated Alternator on E-body
« on: January 09, 2005 - 08:38:32 AM »
Has anyone (CP?) changed the externally regulated alternator on an E-body to a internally regulated unit? Have a 72 Challenger with Rallye dash (actually the rallye dash is a 71 unit, but that shouldnt matter - meaning no - reset knobs thru the woodgrain and no seat belt warning light). If so, how does the wiring need to be configured to include the series amp meter? Just run the alt output thru the meter and to some junction?

Maybe I'm just being dense, did the 73 & 74 have internal regulators?

End result is, I want to clean up the engine wiring. Going with a DUI dist, battery in trunk, etc. Want to try and eliminate the ECU and voltage regulator.

All the alternators were externally regulated. I asked a little while back about upgrading mine, and I was given some great info. The thread is below. You are right in that if you go with an internally regulated, one wire type, you will have to install a volt meter in place of the ampmeter gauge you have.

Thanks for the link to the previous posting. The Powermaster sounds like a good possibility. I would prefer a replacement volt meter that would mount in the same slot as the rallye ammeter, or, make a shunted ammeter that would work in it's place. Shifted my boat (twin diesels, upper and lower stations) from ammeter to voltmeters, didnt like the idea of running all that current all over the place. Besides, I personally believe that monitoring an accurate voltmeter gives a better indication of the electrical system status. I need to look into the possibility of converting that old style series ammeter in the dash to a safer, more modern shunted type. Thanks again.

Ok the field wires you are elimating by going internally regulated do no more than  switch the alt on & off , all the current continues to go through exactly the same path through the ammeter
