half top vinyl roof on a 70 ??
« on: September 20, 2011 - 12:04:02 AM »
http://dallas.craigslist.org/ndf/cto/2551912703.html

So this car has a half vinyl roof.
I have never seen this on a 70's e body.
Can anyone confirm this is a real option that was available for e bodies?

Maybe ask if he has the code for the half vinyl roof?  :dunno:  Or the all the fender tag codes?  :dunno:
1972 Dodge Challenger Rallye 340, AT, Code TB3=Super Blue, SBD=8/17/1971.  Yes, a Rallye without the fender louvers from the factory because of the body side molding option.

Curious what the price is, maybe he means 20 hundred, ($2,000)? Don't like the look to much. Sounds like he wont give out the fender tag to easy.

Look at this old thread, half vinyl roof AND a sunroof.  No idea if it's factory or not.  :dunno:

One member, BARACDA, says he's seen one before,
"I have seen that "halo" roof on one other Barracuda last summer near Sacramento.  It was a light blue car owned by literally a little old lady who had it at a car show.   I had taken several pics of it but have since deleted them."

He calls it a "halo" roof, like the code I mentioned before, although it could be a code for a Duster or Charger as I've seen the half vinyl roof on those cars before, but not E-bodies.  Maybe ask the seller if there is a V20 code on the fender tag.  :dunno:

1/2 vinyl roof referred to as a "canopy roof"

Found these codes, (from http://www.genocide2600.com/~traviso/mml/bodydecode.html)  just not sure of the year.

V4# Canopy Vinyl Roof (# Denotes Color), Body Side Stripes (# denotes color)
V4B Black Canopy Vinyl Roof
V4W White Canopy Vinyl Roof
V4X Black Canopy Vinyl Roof

This site http://www.restorationassistant.com/moparfendertag.html
has a V20 as a halo roof then later all the V4 codes as Canopy roof.

I wonder if there is a difference between a canopy and a halo roof?

Hmmmm...so far it seems that only 1970 Barracuda/Cudas have them....  no mention of a half vinyl roof in a '70 Challenger brochure...

http://www.stockmopar.com/_images/brochures/1970-dodge-challenger-dealer-brochure/original/1970-dodge-challenger-dealer-brochure-4.jpg

I checked out a '70 Barracuda/Cuda brochure and no mention of a half vinyl roof but they do not list in the same detail all the available options for that year.

Did you notice the blackish looking car above and the orange on in the craigslist ad are both Gran Coupes?  (You can see the emblems on the pics.)  :clueless:  Maybe it's a gran Coupe option?  When taking a quick look at the Barracuda brochure, I didn't see mention of a Gran Coupe.  Weird....  :sly:

Am I missing something.  I did not see a mention of the half roof on the first link.

If it was available for a cuda, that should have been available for a challenger.

I will read it again.

Thanks for the info guys.

I wonder what Barry will say.

Nope, you're not missing anything.  There is no mention of a half vinyl roof for the Challenger brochure.  They get into a fair amount of detail in the Challenger Brochure vs the Barracuda brochure but not all the codes for that year are in there.

I do not know if all options were available for both cars.... Never saw a Challenger with a Hockey Stick stripe...  :dunno:  Gran coupes, Western Sport Specials, Deputy cars, etc...

Would be good if someone had one of those "Facts and Features" manuals or dealer option list for the 1970 year to see if it was an option.  I have a 1972 one but that's of no use here.

Anyone have one of these?   :clueless:  Would a service manual show the half vinyl roof IF it was a factory option?  :dunno:
