Awesome, Trunk hinges will be great!

Here they are prototyped and ready to be fitted on the car.  I have some questions for the group so I will start its own thread.

Hello Ted (The Billet House),
The aluminum billet front hinges are beautiful with all the cutouts, milling, and artistic cutting away material.  Respectfully, but realistically at $745 apair that is out ouf the reach of most Mopar car owners. Also what is with a similar cutout, and  milled new Challenger billet hood hinges you are selling for $485.00. That is a $260.00 difference! To me or any layman, I can't see that much difference, other than a arbutary raising the price of $260. But that is your business. What would be a reasonable and to open up your hinges to a lot more Mopar buyers is leave the design alone and DELETE ALL THE CUTOUTS AND MILLING and make a second much less expensive version. You will be able to sell a lot more hinges this way to the Mopar community.  Most people like me would want a more affordable billet aluminum version and let those who can afford it can pay for your present much more elaborate version.

Hi melloguy,
I appreciate you taking the time to ask that question.  If you have it, I am sure others do as well.  I will see if I can answer it for you.

There are a number of differences between the the new challenger and the old.  The most notable differences are the weight of the hood and the incorporation of the spring in the hinge.

Because of this:
1. The e-body Hood hinge uses 10 sealed stainless ball bearings.  One at every rotating point.  The new challenger with a hood that probably weighs 12lbs uses shoulder bolts and bushing holes.  I use all stainless steel hardware to hold the bearings.
2. The gas spring that I use costs me $150 a pair.  They are made in Germany and are of the best quality.  The new Challenger does not include a gas spring since the factory one is used.
3. Because the gas spring pulls between the actual support members, they are significantly thicker than the new Challenger.  (Just ask thedogeboys what the first set look like when did the prototyping on his car in the parking lot on the power tour!!!  turned into pretzels)
4. The E-body Hood Hinge incorporates a turn buckle that allows you to adjust the geometry of the hood.  This is very useful when dialing in the correct angle.  The turnbuckle is made from all stainless steel components so it will never rust.
5. There are 5 pieces that make up each side of the e-body as apposed to 4 (All of them smaller) that make up the new Challenger.
6. The cut outs and milling once programmed do not add a significant amount to the cost and play a roll in the set-up for the second and third operation.  Once the machine is running the few extra minutes are nothing.  In machining, your time is spent on the set-up.

It is hard to tell the difference between the two hinges on the web page, but if you take a look at the hood hinges on any new car and compare that to your stock hood hinges, you will be able to tell there is a tremendous amount of more material and weight to your 70's hood hinge.

Lastly, let me just say that because of the additional hardware, on a strait up hard cost analysis, I make less on the e-body hood hinge than I do off the newer cars, but if I priced them similarly, they would be about $100 more.

I hope I answered your question and feel free to post, call or email me any other questions.  If you find yourself in Tampa, stop by.

Thanks again,
Ted

Hello Ted,

You have a very nice product and seem like a decent guy, but at $745.00, I will buy many, many, many items for my car before spending $745.00 for billet springs. AGAIN, if was selling these things, I personally would finds ways to cut my cost to be able to make a good second version at a much lower price point to open this product to many more Mopar buyers. I would not be satisfied selling these to Mopar owners with $50,000 dollar plus cars and with huge bank accounts. If you ever do this or have a crazy good sale offer for cuda-challenger.com members, I would be interested in purchasing them. Good luck with your products.

AL

I know first hand the amount of R & D \ Time Ted has in bringing this quality of a product to market. I to wish the price point was a little less, However they are competitively priced to the gm and ford offerings and they sale 2 or 3 to every Mopar part sold. Welcome to the world of owing a mopar

BTW everything seems to be going up lately.

From what was said, it sounds like the heavy hitters in the cost are the hardware and gas shocks. Very understandable. It does seem priced accurately for what you are getting, great product.

That being said, there are material choices for bushings and hardware that would be cheaper but still corrosion resistant and durable. It would be possible to make a version with nylon bushings/bearings and the likes. There is no way to get around the strut price, but other things may be done to cut a hundred or so off the materials.

I'm not trying to nit pick but material science and mechanical equipment are my thing (Mech. Eng.) I really think this can be made cheaper using alternative components.

THAT BEING SAID, you will most likely have a product that is not as industrial or physically robust as these original ones. It's like a hood hinge for a space ship VS a ford pinto. If you want best of the best, go with them as they are currently. The cycle life will be amazingly long I'm sure. They are impressive pieces.
If you want something that looks good and works well for the average joe, a cheaper version will work and last long time as well. Just not past a nuclear meltdown like the original bad boys.

Keep in mind, the cheaper it is, the less life it will have- either kinetically or aesthetically. You could make the whole thing out of carbon steel for hella cheap, but it would probably rust over time and be heavy as all get out. Think of the whole cheap, reliable, good triangle.

Just my 2 cents.

Hey everyone,  I appreciate all the support.  The trunk hinges have been more successful than hood hinges when they launched!

As for pricing, I price everything based on cost with a percentage for overhead and me getting paid.  I do not put any fluff in the price so there is not room to have a sale.  I don't like the policy some companies have to mark up to mark down.  I don't think this fair to someone who has paid full price or doesn't know about one deal or another.  I think that is one reason most people hate car shopping.  If you by from me, you'll know you paid the same price as everyone else, and you got them for lowest price I could sell them for.  (Come see my house if you don't believe me :) )

Thanks again everyone.  This is the best forum on the net and I have talked to several of you over the last few days so I know this for sure.
