oops! one more oil pick up ?
« on: September 25, 2011 - 01:06:00 AM »
I forgot to ask:  what is the correct shape of pick up for a 383?  I have seen two different ones that said they were for a 383.  One has 2  bends in the tube and the other one only has 1 bend.

this is what Neil said in reply to your question in the other thread

if you have the 6 qt Hemi pan the 2-3 bend pick up is correct

The one with the 2 curves or more is for the 402 hp pan. which came on the 383/440 hp engines. The 1 curve tubes come in a couple of different angle curves and lenghts for certain type pans. The 6pk/hemi pan wasn't a 402 pan type but the tube was a bit longer since it also used the windage tray

This has always been confusing. I have a 6 qt "Hemi" pan bought from Chrysler on my B block. I use the windage tray and also utilise the straight 3/8NPT pickup. Measured all of this using straight edges and the pickup sits about 1/8" off the bottom of the pan. So I assume it is ok. My son's 73 400HP Charger came with a factory windage tray and the 2-3 bend pickup which we reused when we repowered it with the 440. Both seem to work.

Thanks for all the replies.  It sounds like I have the correct pickup.
