Finally, I've got my car started
« on: September 25, 2011 - 11:04:08 PM »
A few weeks ago, I pulled the motor and trans from my car and sent it to Tony Miller. He's going to do some light bodywork (like getting the new driver's floor I had put in installed correctly, and installing a set of torque boxes), and then apply some paint. I also managed to track down Domingo, who is in the process of making a steel TA scoop to be installed on my flat hood, and I'll shortly be ordering a set of stripes from ChallengerGary. Work begins!  :jumping:

Who knows what it'll be by the time I can afford to get to it?  Before I lost the last job I had been upgrading the suspension steadily. Running from light to light is fun, but back in the day, when somebody would ask me to race, I'd say "Sure, one lap of the beltway," and I've been a road racer ever since. So, while the rest of the body stuff is getting taken care of I wanted to get the torque boxes put it. Right now the ultimate plan for the motor is to build a small block stroker from my 340, but that'll be down the road.

Sounds like a plan!!!  Stroker is NICE!!!  :2thumbs:

Yeah, I know what you mean by light to light then road racer.  When I was a teenager, I used to do the light to light deal in an old Bonneville with a 400ci engine, surprised a few cars.  All stock except for a Trans Am shaker hood scoop.

I had a 5th Ave I beefed up with a Holley carb/Weiand 2p intake (sometimes ran a Rochester Quadra-Jet), modified side exhaust and added extra leaf springs to help the handling.  I used to race around on Soldiers Field Road and Storrow Drive, what I called my own personal race track.  It was a cool road that ran along the Charles River in Boston, had some nice curves.  Road racing is a lot of fun, not just stomping on the gas but you get to know the limits of your car's handling on curves and such.  I used to see the same Porsche 944 on Storrow Drive.  Always had him on the straights but lost him on the curves.  The 5th ave wasn't lightning fast but could do 55MPH in 1st gear after the mods.

After that I had a '90 Acura GS with Mugen racing struts/coils/exhaust/sway bars and that car handled great.  That car really hooked me on tossing curves with another car but I had to be careful as that car handled really well, not all the cars that tried to race me could handle as well and it made for a car doing a 180 spin on Storrow,  heading into oncoming traffic, trying to keep up with me.  From that day, I just went fast on my own, fearing the lives of others may get in danger.

I just found another pic  I took that the day I had to leave NC.

I'm going to head up to Tony's over Thanksgiving week. I'm planning on delivering some parts I forgot to send, and taking picks in Hocking Hills, but I'm sure I'll get some picks of the car and jaw with Tony a while.

Some pics from Ohio

The car in the paint booth, the deck lid, and the original flat hood looking better than it has in about 20 years.

What's a good lap time?

If I recall correctly the DC beltway is 64 miles, so a "legal" lap time would be about 64 minutes. Way back in the day (circa 1979) I did it in 51 minutes, about 2 am so there was practically no traffic, using all four lanes, and having a lot of luck that I avoided cops. This was also my personal best speed in the Challenger; pegged the speedometer and still pulling, so I'm guessing near 130, but that lasted less than a minute.

In theory I'd guess it could be done a lot faster, but the conditions I had are almost completely gone. The traffic currently is almost constant, and large sections are now divided into two 2-lane sections in each direction, so those big sweeping turns I was taking aren't possible any more. Nowadays it would pretty much require a closed course, and where's the fun in that
