5 Speed Transmission Conversion
« on: September 26, 2011 - 03:36:31 PM »
I'm looking for anyone that has upgraded their automatic transmissions to a manual 5 speed. My auto trans has decided to quit on me last Friday. Has anyone done this kind of swap? I'm thinking of getting one of Keisler's 5 spd trans. Any know how well they really work? And will the shifter fit into my auto console location.
Any help would be appreciated.

the kits are pretty good to use from keisler, simple to install, I have done 2 and nothing real major to deal with. you shift will be in the original location, the trans you get in the kit will be for that application. only thing is hydraulic clutch or manual clutch.
with the hydraulic, bleeding the bearing is a PITA..

Thanks Dave. Did you get the 500 or 600 version? And what price did you pay? I haven't sent for a quote yet.

If you're patient, I'd wait for either the new Passon 5-speed, or Keisler's RS units.  I hear powershifting a Tremec from 2nd to 3rd has issues.

I did the 727-to-Keisler manual conversion 2.5 years ago.  I had clearance problems with the tunnel, and I even used an original 4-speed hump instead of a repop.  If you do some searching on the web there seems to be tunnel clearance issues with a small percentage of E-bodies, mostly AAR Cudas.  Not really sure why, or if the AAR thing is a coincedence.  It could just be that so many cars have replacement floors (and other parts), which can have a lot of varaince in installation.

Once installed the transmission is great.  When I bought my car it was almost undrivable.  The engine was screaming at 50 mph, and I don't like automatics.  This is way better/more fun to drive.

earlier versions may not have added the extra piece that you need to install on the right side of the tunnel in conjunction with the 4 spd hump. gives more clearence for the square body of the trans.
