Auto VS. 4 Speed RPM

Given all other things equal, which would give you lower highway cruising rpm--an A833 4 speed (non OD) or a 727 Auto??
I think the final on the 4 speed is 1:1, I am not sure about the ratio of 3rd on the Auto.

both are 1:1 in high gear , you will get some slippage in the converter so you lose about 3% with the Auto

3% I can live with.....I was looking at at Auto car and was wondering what the difference would be. Also thinking of a 4 speed conversion, but that's a lot of work. If I went that far, I would put a 5 speed in it....just thinking out loud.

3% on a STOCK torque converter....once you step up to a High Stall converter, better re-think that automatic..

 You could consider an A518 conversion.  Less work on the car to accomplish, cheaper to do... fewer parts to buy and install.
I'm about 3 weeks away from doing my install.
Will have a nice overdrive tranny when done.

All depends on your convertor, When I went to the 4spd I notice 250-300 rpm difference..

As long as you don't mind hacking the tunnel and crossmember to get it in there, your good....

The 518 isn't all that great a swap. Some talk about the "Hacking" needed to get a Kiesler Manual in their cars yet, when it comes to the 518 hanging all down under the car with a heavily modded crossmember, they tend to "Accept" it....

if you select the right stall converter you should be above the stall speed @ highway speeds but a 300 rpm loss would be normal
The manual will always return better milage as there is less moving parts / weight + you do not have to pump the fluid around

Well, I should know for sure in a few weeks, but the write-ups from people doing this with their e-bodies suggest otherwise.  Specifically regarding the tunnel and cross member.  The modification is done to the tranny, to make it fit.  Certainly nothing like adding a 4 speed hump for a manual.
The tranny mount has to be modified and the drive shaft shortened, again nothing too major (or so they say).

I'll report back with details when it's done.

Might wanna check this out first...It's a B body, but I can't see an E body being much different being they share the same 4-speed tail housing..

The article on the swap was an interesting read.......the reason I asked the original question is that I was looking at another car (which had an auto--I already own a 4 speed) and was curious on the difference in rpm between the 4 sp and the auto.

But just for conversation's sake....wouldn't a gear vendors overdrive unit be an easier add on??

Well, the way I understand it, the Gear Vendors OD unit is a bolt in, but hella expensive..Plus tricky to understand that button when splitting ratios. 1st-1st over..2nd-2nd over...3rd-3rd over...4th- 4th over...

where the engine is located in the b body its the same to the e body  . drive shaft length is where its  different wich would be the same for a engine transplant .
