Subtracted 1.5g from the bob weight
« on: October 04, 2011 - 01:56:56 PM »
Ok, for most of this year I've been building a 360.

I finally got to putting it together and noticed that my pistons were designed for Magnum rods and the rods I got were for LA pistons.

Of course I found this out after having the whole assembly balanced.

So I ended up machining the small end of the rods a little bit to get the clearance required (.030" on one side only) which translated to about 1.5g per rod.

I asked an engine builder and he said he would re-balance the assembly, but I kind of expected that answer because he does great work and has superior attention to detail.  (if only I could afford him!)

But I'm in the real world, don't really have the $$$ to spend on a rebalance, but I guess I would if I had to.  *sigh*

So soliciting second opinions on what would YOU do?

btw the combo:
KB362s
RHS heads with 2.02 intakes
Lunati 60402 cam
Eddy Air-Gap Intake
Holley SA 670
68-70 HiPo 340 Manifolds
tight converter, 3.23 gears, and 26" tall tires.
Max RPM about 5500-6000
Mostly street, lots of autocross

Rebalance the assembly.  Driving around with an unbalanced assembly would be a disaster.

an unbalanced engine will not last nearly as long as a properly balanced one will But 1.5 grams in minute & maybe un-noticable

See what the shop that balanced it originally says.
They may give you a better deal since they did the work originally.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

Oil allowance on a single rod is 4 grams,a dollar bill weighs one, and factory parts aren't within 5 grams of each other stock. I would not worry about it too much. A full rebalance costs $120 or so and maybe cheaper since all you really need to do is respin the crank assuming you have the old balance card and know the new change you made. Either way I wouldn't blame your decision.

Thanks for the input.  I've decided to re-spin the crank.  *sigh*  While its already better than any stock balance, it really needs to be great.  I'm too far to half @$$ now...
