I've been a diabetic for 14 years so I know how you feel, especially when you're first diagnosed.
There is hope though. The list of foods that you can eat is longer than you might expect.
Once your doctors get your numbers under control, then you will feel much better and be able
to get the mindset to fix yourself a bit easier. If you want help or just to ask questions, feel free to
PM me with your phone # and we can talk.      Good Luck, it does get better,  Andy
If I cant fix it, it's broke

Sorry to hear about your condition, but you'll adapt and learn as we all do.  I have been diabetic for the past 11 years.  I too was only 37 when I developed this problem and thought I'd never be able to have a sweet snack or fast food ever again but as time goes by I found the fear subsided and ate more normally.  I still eat fast food and treats but I use a needle to administer insulin so I'll just take more when I eat a bigger meal.   I stopped drinking sugar pops but drink diet pops now.  They don't taste as good but your taste buds will get use to it.   My vision was blurred for over a month before I found out and when my numbers were back down to a more normal level my vision went back to normal.  One word of advise is to make sure you check your levels before you go for a drive and always have a snack with you incase your levels get too low.  Back in 2005 I ended up in a ditch because I never checked my levels before leaving my fathers farm and driving home.  I passed out at the wheel.  No one was hurt but I lost my license for about 8 months and had a dickens of a time to get it back.  I learned my lesson the hard way.   Good luck and take care.

I've been diabetic for a couple of years now. I still eat my hamburgers and drink my pop lol. It's all about how you are able to control it. I take 2 pills of metformin a day and that seems to keep me around the 120-150 range on a normal day, eating what I used too. The biggest change I have made to my diet is my soda. I still drink it, but now I stick to diet versions so there is no sugar in it. I have found that sugar in drinks is the fastest way to get your blood sugar up, because it practically gets straight into the system, it takes very little time to break down drinks compared to food.

And I don't drink yoohoo ever!!! But then again I secretly think that yoohoo causes diabetes, because I was on a weird "I love yoohoo" kick when it happened lol. Though if they had a diet yoohoo I know I'd be all over it.

You will find out more about what you can eat when you get your prescriptions figured out. I stuck to a fairly limited diet when I found out I was diabetic, until I could get my pills. I ate fish or chicken and broccoli for my main meals, only had eggs for breakfast (only had to do this for a few days til my dr's appointment). The reason I chose broccoli as a veggie is that it is fairly low in carbs so it would help to keep my sugar levels down until I got in to see the dr.

I know it sucks to be diagnosed with diabetes, I even expected it to come considering that I have a long family history of diabetes. And even taking that into account it was still a huge blow to me. Definitely has an impact, and I understand what you're going through.

If you need any help with food ideas or anything send me a pm. I've got a few diabetic cookbooks lying around, and I think my wife (who has been awesome through all this) has found a couple places where you can get info for all kinds of things pertaining to diabetes for free.

:iagree:  Good advise.  I met a guy that this happened to.  Now he doesn't drive his '67 Corvette.

Hope all works out for you hpe600rt.  Give it time as you are just being diagnosed and your levels need to level out.  There are many varying degree of diabetes and once you stabilize and the docs figure out what your medication regimen is you'll be good to go.  It'll take some lifestyle change and perhaps it'll be for the better.     I'm glad you're getting help!

Well a burger without a bun isn't the end of the world. I am kinda surprised the doc only gave you 10 ml of insulin,
usually the standard is 1 unit for every 15 points that you are high.I guess trial and error is the best approach.
Just remember this one thought when you think it is getting hard," it is easier to manage my diet than it is to
live with neuropathy (loss of feeling) or an amputated foot.". Diabetes isn't a disease to take lightly, but with a little
bit of work, can be managed easily. And if you can manage it without the insulin, all the better for you!

Biggest thins that help IMO are diet, exercise, lifestyle change.  Takes a bit to get used to but in the long run it'll help.

When I was little, when ever we went to my uncles house, he would jog after work.  I used to think that my uncle was so healthy, jogging and all.  I mentioned this to him and he said that he didn't want to at first but made the change to help his diabetes.  He says he's much more healthy than he was before the diabetes.

My guess is because he has become recently diabetic the doc wants to see what kind of medication he'll end up requiring. If they can get him started on pills and that is enough he may not really require insulin yet, and it might be dangerous to give him too much.
