Trunk Weatherstrip Install ?
« on: October 16, 2011 - 01:50:16 PM »
I did a search and found a bunch of comments but none with pics. I bought one from metro years ago and put it on but my trunk would not close so I tore it out and ordered a new one from year one. It comes in but it is exactly the same one but seems softer. So before I glue it on again can anyone tell me which direction does it go. This stuff looks nothing like original. Thanks

I had a Metro trunk seal and wasn't happy with its thickness. I switched to a Soft Seal and it was much better.

The two ends meet glued together in the center near the dutchman panel.

which way does it lay though. Does it get glued straight up or on its side. does the rounded side go towards the trunk or to the outside if it gets glued on its side. That raised edge is only on one side so where does that go.

Your type doesn't look like what I recall what the OEM design is like.

I posted this picture on your other thread a couple months ago.  This shows the profile of the original weather stripping.(the one on the left)  The style you have now is the style I'm going to use.  Once installed, it will look close to original...I think.  For all I know, the original part was rounded when new just like the repop.

The round section should be UP.  The raised rib goes towards the inside on the original part.  That's how I'd install the new one as well.

The picture I posted shows the original trunk weatherstripping from an October 72 built 73.(the left one in the picture)  The only two styles listed for 73 is the style on the right in my picture(early 73) and the D shaped one.(late 73-74)  As you can see, the original one looks nothing like what the early 73 part is supposed to look like.  It looks pretty close to a old compressed D shape.

I'm pretty sure my style is what was installed on the 74's as well.  Once installed you won't be able to see the inside of the seal.  It should look close to my original one once it's compressed for awhile.

Well I just put that piece of crap on for the third time and the trunk won't shut. At least this time I used tape and did not glue it. I went to my buddies house with a perfect 73 challenger and his looked nothing like mine. I am calling yo tomorrow and returning this and ordering the early 72 as that loooks like the one on my buddies 73. I am really getting tired of this aftermarket stuff, nothing comes with directions and nothing actually fits. Venting, sorry. Thanks for the help.

The 70-71 I think is a better design weatherstrip.
If you are going for points you can get the later year type.

Get the Soft Seal if you decide on the earlier type.

Yes I believe his looked like yours. I am not looking for points as I am building a hot street/restomod type car. I think I will get the softseal. Any idea who sells it or do I just go through softseal. Their website does not even offer the 73 and later type. Thanks
