19X11.5 New Gen/335 tire fitment
« on: October 29, 2011 - 04:46:29 PM »
Finally getting around to fitting these big rollers under the 'Cuda. I've had the car mini-tubbed for quite a while now and always knew I was going to have to cut the rear down.

I took the wheel to the shop to bolt it up just to roughly see where we're at. Here's what we got so far. It looks like the lower 4 link bar might need to be moved in. I want the tire to set about where there's half of the sidewall to the whole sidewall covered by the top of the wheel opening.

We'll get the Dana out and get the car up on blocks and position the wheels where we want and go from there.

What's the offset/backspacing of those wheels?

I woulda gone w/a b-body rear.

5.5". A B-body rear would have been ideal but I when I ordered the rearend from Strange I got it in standard length because I was going to do an AAR tribute but then things progressed to where it was going to be an all out Pro Touring AAR tribute. That required ridiculously huge wheels. I was actively looking to trade out my Dana for a B-body rear but with the amount of money I had in the S-60 nothing was coming to fruition.

The Cuda is going to look sweet with those wide back tires!  Should handle like its on rails too.

It already does but now these 19 inchers weigh about the same a the 17X9 Cragars! Those steelies are some heavy wheels for being 17's.

Looks mean!  Can't wait to see it with the rear narrowed.

Thanks Travis. Talking with you while ordering these and mini tubbing was invaluable. Thank you.

Mini tubbing really req'd?

There's a Swede here I think that has a '70 AAR green clone with XV Level II suspension and I don't think he had to minitub with 18x12s and 335s???

Mini tubbing probably depends on how you want the stance. I'm going 335s also but want a low tucked stance so I chose to mini tub mine. I figured while I had it torn apart and in bare metal it was worth it. If you can compromise on the ride height perhaps not. Also I believe a challenger has a touch more room. Either way a custom backspace will be the way to go fitting the axle width to the wheels. I also "stretched" the outer half of the outer wheel tub to allow more room for a lower ride height since an e-bodies outer half tub goes at an angle to center which can interfere with the tire if low.

And that is an area that I'm concerned about as well. The outer wheel housing really angles down at a steep angle. It might have to have some angle taken out of it and made more square to get it to really sit down in the rear.
I'm going up to the shop tomorrow to pull the Dana and will try to shoot some pics of the wheel housings but my phone camera doesn't have a flash so they might not turn out good enough to post.

Huge difference with the tire inside the fenderwell!

That looks awesome!

That was just a quick thing to see what it would look like but the final placement of the wheel will be in another inch and up to where the upper portion of the sidewall is not visible. You'll see it soon.

I'm a big fan of those wheels.  Are there options on the hardware finish?  Thanks for sharing your progress!

There sure is Dave. The wheels are the New Gen 'Lite'. There is also a Lite that is a two piece and has no hardware and the spokes look more like the Mini-Lite's from the Trans-Am days. They are considerably cheaper due to being a 2 piece where as these are 3 piece.

Jon or Justin at Driverz Inc. can hook you up with whatever you need. Jon knows everyone in the wheel business as he started out over at Budnik Wheels in Huntington Beach, CA and has now moved to Corona, CA and started his own retail business. He started the New Gen wheel company a few years ago and has done many tailored made things on custom wheels, i.e. hidden hardware, anodize, powder, paint. They can even do custom engraving on the centers.

They are a dealer for Rushforth, Boyd, Forgeline, Schott, Foose, American Racing, Weld, Vintage Wheel Works, ........ they can also get you any other wheel and work directly with the mfg. and builder. Most companies outsource their mfg. to machine shops in Jon's area (Riverside, Ontario, Corona). Jon knows all of these guys in the business and delivers what you want and what he says he will.

Give them a call. I was sent to them by a friend and have sent a couple of other friends to them. It may sound like an advertisement but I just want to spread the word that these guys are the ones to go to if you need anything custom.
