Replacement wiring harness
« on: October 29, 2011 - 09:03:05 PM »
Year one is running another 30 % off special, so I started looking at
engine wiring harnesses. I have a 72 with no harness. But I am going with
a B/B with electronic Ign. Sooo... can I use the 71 B/B harness? Will it
fit without having to do alot of work?

                                                         Thanks for any help
If I cant fix it, it's broke

do they offer a 72 for BB with electronic ,even though it is not factory it is a common swap.
the 71 will work but the positions of a few wires may be changed which is easy to fix

The 71 harness won't have any connections for electronic ignition.  I'd just get the stock 72 harness.  All you have to do is extend the distributor and coil wires since they would be in the front instead of the back.

I do not see why the 71 would not have EI set up?  You should be able to opt with or w/o it

They do offer the 71 B/B harness modified for electronic ign.
They do not offer the 72 harness for a B/B since it was never offered.
I can make the 71 fit I guess, as long as the bulkhead connector is the same.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

Because BB's in 71 still had points.  The stock harness won't have the ECU hookup for the MP electronic ignition.  If they offer a modified harness to accept EI then that would work just fine.

That's what I was looking for. Thanks for the input.

I don't know if all the connections coming out of the bulkhead connector are the same from 71 to 72.  That's why I suggested going with the 72 harness.  That way you know all the wires at the bulkhead are correct.  You would only have to lengthen a few wires.

If you can verify that the bulkhead connections are the same then the converson harness would work.

I have a 71 BB and got the 71 BB wiring harness for electronic ignition.  The only issue that you will have is the wiring color coding will be for the 72 challenger.  For instance it will not have a blue with white stripe wire going to the alternator.  That wire is solid blue.  There is a wiring diagram for the 72's on another post here.  It is Need Help with MSD wiring.  It's was just a week ago that it was posted.
