wow big heads youll need the cubes for them so i would build the 512.

i am more of a fan of the 451 with the 440 source or the eddie heads  or the indy EZ HEADS .  11 1/2 TO 1   is the minimum for compression.

Like the old saying goes "There's no replacement for displacement" I'd go for the 512. :2cents:

Interesting, with the 400's bigger bore wouldn't it have the better bore to stroke ratio or are you referring to another ratio.  Trust me, I'm not disagreeing with you just trying to learn, I'm trying to make this decision myself and thought the 400 was the better choice in almost every way...  For me, the 400 has the added benefit of passing as a 383 in an original 383 car.

The deck height in a 400 is less than in a 440 so using a 400 to get 512 you will have shorter rods

OK just to let you know - my trip back to my old country of New Zealand last Feb saw a guy at the track running a 68Valiant Dart (similar to Dodge Dart) with a 451 with iron heads/auto etc and he was running 8.9sec 1/4 consistently. 158mph through the traps. He was taking it to 7500 rpm. What are you looking for?

:lol:Between my last post in this thread and now I built a 451" . I had a 440 block so I could have went either way. I like RPM!  :grinyes: Figured the 451" would do all I needed on a street engine.
Mine is a street engine with Mopar stage 6 heads. These allowed me to use a 440 intake with no spacers etc...
Raised ports on these heads are a good choice for smaller CID motors.
