Ballast resistor wiring with electronic ignition?
« on: November 01, 2011 - 03:26:50 AM »
Ok here is my setup.  I have an electronic ignition setup and the 4 way ballast resistor.  It does not appear to be wired in accordance with the diagram. I want to re wire it correctly.  Should I be using a 2 way or 4 way ballast resistor?  Anyone got a diagram?

Here is a pic of my situation..

Thanks!  That is a good start!  I was hoping to see the manual for a '72+  I noticed there is a notch indicating the B.R. is directional.  I think mine is miswired and backwards too.

Is your ECU a 4 or a 5 pin?  I think the 4 prong ballast is only needed with the factory 5 pin ECU.  The 4 pin ECU's had the ballast integrated inside the unit.  You may only need a 2 prong ballast.  Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

the 4 pin ECU needs only a 2 pin ballast to the coil or just use one side of the 4 pin , if the ecu is a 5 pin you need the wire to low voltage pin on the ECU , the other side of the ballast

So you are saying to use a 2 prong ballast with a 5 pin?  I think mine is a 5 pin.

The factory ECU was a 5 pin and used the 4 prong ballast.  The newer aftermarket ECUs are a 4 pin.  Those only require a 2 prong ballast.

Remove the harness from the ECU and show us the PINS........That will be your answer.

Also, do you know where you got the ECU you're running?  I'm looking for one that looks closer to stock then the one I have.  You could paint yours black and it would look pretty close.

Tman I will get some pictures tonight or tomorrow of the pins.

I do not know where is that ecu came from. It was on the car when I got it. I have only had the car about 2 years.

There's your answer, you only need a 2 prong ballast, so wire it for a 2 prong.  That should settle your dilemna.

you can run the electric choke to the blue feed wire at the ballast
