Move to Florida
« on: November 02, 2011 - 03:43:32 PM »
Well it appears that I will be moving to Florida.  We weren't sure up til now.  Found a house in Boca Raton great schools and a 3 car garage, finally.  I'm probably looking at the first of the year +/-.  But I have a few questions:

Up here I live and hour from the Carlisle, PA events.  Is there anything like that in south Florida?

I know registering a car is fairly straight forward down there with no safety inspection and all.  When I register the cars will I need to pay taxes on them?  In Maryland they suck you dry and you do pay taxes on a car if it comes in from another state.

Anything else you can give me a heads up on (good or bad) regarding the move and Florida would be much appreciated.  Thanks

Dave

welcome
Boca is very nice.
The only thing mopar related is the florida mopar nats in Ft. Lauderdale every March. Should be a 10 mile drive for you.
Will cost you a couple hundred to register each tag the first time, then about $60-$120 per year after that, depending on the weight? of the vehicle I think.
Auto insurance is expensive down here. In fact I think youll find EVERYTHING down here is more expensive, except the sunshine

The sales tax bull$heet is just when you buy a car from another State and bring it into Maryland. You already own your car, so it's just a matter of turning in your old tags up here, and getting new ones down there. No taxes involved.

The Garlits show is THIS weekend, Nov 5th & 6th.  I plan on being there for my first time to a show with the car.  Look for an EB3 Gran Coupe!
Hop on the turnpike headed north, and once you merge onto I-75, it's about 20 minutes; exit at CR 484.

I will be driving right by Garlits place tomorrow night to visit my son in Gainesville and the homecoming weekend game against Vanderbilt, but Ive never stopped to visit. Ive heard its a great place to see, especially if youre a 1/4 mile fan.
He has a website that can give you a taste of the place, but the annual show attracts lots of other mopars besides just the 1/4 mile crowd.

Hi Dave,
ChallengerGary and myself are around 10 -15 minutes from Boca.  We'll see you at some shows.  There is nothing like Carlisle or the northern shows here in FL.

Well, i won't be bringing the Gran Coupe to Garlits.  i put a nice gash in the door lasst saturday backing it out of the garage, and while i was hoping it would be ready, some complications arose while buffing out the clear coat.  :banghead:

as far as big shows go, the Turkey Rod Run at the Daytona speedway, over the Thanksgiving holiday is the biggest even in Florida that i know of.  i do not know how it compares to Carlisle, but it is a pretty fun event. over 1000 cars, and lots of vendors.

I will be at the Turkey Rod Run thanksgiving weekend inside the daytona speedway. They will have over 4000 cars of all kinds, and usually at least a couple hundred nice mopars scattered around. Prepare to walk for miles if you go. It is a great show.

Hey guys,

A litttle change in plans.  The house fell through.  The sellers changed their mind.  Now were looking in Wellington.  Can you guys tell me what you think of the Wellington Community?  Especially the high schools.  Thanks

Dave

I know Wellington well.  It is a few minutes from me.  It is a decent place to live.  The schools are good.  In the past you could not work on a car there at all.  You could not change a tire in the driveway.  I understand it is less strict on the regulations now.  I would check and see what their code enforcement rules are now.  I used to live in an area like that and I moved to a place that is zoned county general.

Ive never heard of it. When is that...in October?
Looks cool, but that would be about 250 miles for me and too far. I will be there next week in the speedway but wont have my car. I just enjoy walking and looking for 4 or 5 hours on the saturday afternoon every year for the last 4 or 5 years, and checking out all the parts vendors. You can easily spend two full days there if you want.
In fact that show kindled the long lost classic car lover in me and eventually led me to my cuda a few years ago.
