New Hampshire sure looks like it has a lot of great driving routes!
So, today was the day. The shipper called me that he was like half a mile from my home, with a car dying on him on a busy street and he's now parked at a bus stop. I go there, he says it's probably out of fuel, so I go get 2 gallons from a nearby gas station. Still no luck, the battery dies after 1-2 minutes trying to get it going. All right, call roadside assistance for my car I haven't even driven an inch so far. While waiting a guy shows up, asking about the car and telling that he has a '67 Alfa Romeo, so we talk a little and Roadside assistance shows up. Trying to jump start, the damn thing just won't come on! So the Alfa Romeo guy says hold a minute and turns up with a can of starting fluid. Tadaa, it runs, but dies again after 1-2 minutes. We repeat that 3 to 4 times until he finds that just fully opening the throttle plate solves the issue. So there I am, driving away a car fearing it would die any instant. It did not, and even a later cold-start went smoothly. Whew, so after a rough start I took her for a drive for an hour and it runs nicely. There are some things I should fix soon:
- Brake works really hard and barely moves (it was a power-assisted brake, but the previous owner put in front disc brakes, not sure what the issue is)
- Some thing strange with the carburetor, I've
opened a thread with this- Fuel and RPM gauge do not work (explains why it died on the shipper...)
- Left front turnlight is always on
- Clock (Rallye dash) does not work
- Bucket seats and carpet really need to be renewed
- Headliner is not firmly attached, hangs down
And some more things along these lines. Overall I think the car is in very good shape and the issues listed above are what the seller told me. No rust except for the trunk lid as far as I can tell, seems to have had one paint job at some point. Drives well. The steering is a pleasure, even the radio works and the dash is in perfect condition. I'll open a new thread in Restauration about questions and tips for how I should proceed. But now,
