What a fool I was. Thats it for me.
« on: November 10, 2011 - 09:42:16 AM »
Just need to get this off my chest so I can get on with the rest of my life.
I purchased a vehicle about a year ago from a fairly well known individual on this website. I did not know this person and had never seen the car in person. The car was 1500 miles away. Everyone told me I was a fool to do this but I trusted my instincts. We talked for quite some time on the phone and as I listened to his stories I just developed an overall good feeling and somehow knew that I was doing the right thing.
I had a chance to purchase the car that I had always wanted. I gave him what he wanted for the vehicle and we agreed that he would work on the vehicle. I would get a spreadsheet of his time worked as well as a listing of parts and supplies that he had purchased. I paid these amounts promptly and without question. I would purchase the big ticket items myself and have them shipped directly to his shop. I ended up spending double the amount on this car compared to what I had originally planned, but that was also my fault. When given options for building the vehicle I would always purchase new parts. I wanted a vehicle that I could be proud of. Much to my wife’s displeasure I was beginning to spend money we did not have but I was past the point of no return.
I would periodically get pictures sent to me to update me on the progress.
3 months turned into 6, then 9 and finally into a year. The car was apparently ready to be shipped to me. Over the previous year I had never once complained about the time it was taking to get the car completed.
Finally it arrived at my house. The back of the truck opened and I was like a kid on Christmas morning. From a distance the car looked fantastic. The truck driver got in the car to back it off the truck and guess what? It would not start. 15 minutes later we rolled the car off of the truck and  pushed it into my garage with the help of my neighbors.
One month later the car has been driven a total of 50 feet. It died at that point and was again pushed into the garage. Luckily for me I have 2 long time friends who have been Mopar fanatics since birth.
Here is a partial listing of things we have found so far: (Not just mechanical).
1 Various size spark plugs in the car.
2 Wrong alternator brackets.
3 Incorrect oil dipstick and tube.
4 Incorrect power steering cap.
5 Leaking power steering fluid.
6 Low level of transmission fluid.
7 Chipped drivers windshield
8 Wiper arms that looked like they were found in a junkyard
9 Scratched and nicked new Rallye Rims.
10 Loose rear bumper brackets
11 Orange peel paint, paint drips.
12 Chipped paint
13 Dash and dome lights not working
14 Major steering issue.
15 Various missing metal and plastic pieces throughout the vehicle
16 Missing many fasteners throughout the vehicle
17 Hole in the carpet
18 Many wiring issues
19 Incorrect rear brake calipers that are both gouged from the wheels trying to turn.
20 Poor fit on trunk.
21 Incorrect gaps on drivers door.
22 Bubbles in the vinyl roof.

I am sure there are many more and these are just issues that have been spotted before the car has been driven. These issues will all get fixed at an additional cost to me. Once it is complete the car will be sold. I have lost interest in the hobby now. This experience has left a sour taste in my mouth. I have lost the trust that I once had in people.
I know that I made mistakes in this transaction. I bought a car sight unseen. I trusted a person that I did not know.
My advice to anyone new or old to this hobby is to only place your trust in people that you truly know or you may end up like me and get truly burned.

Not everyone in this hobby is out to screw somebody although I'm sure it seems that way now.  Unfortunately, you won't come close to getting your money back out of the car.  My suggestion to you is to put a cover over it and try not to think about it.  Go on with your life and hopefully one day you will be ready to get back into the hobby.  I'd hate for you to regret selling it.  Just take a brake for awhile.

Is it the challenger in your avatar?  I hate to hear these stories as these cars are like a drug to me.  I am so happy when I drive them!!!  I wanted to have someone help fix my car and did find someone I knew and trusted to do the body work and paint.  He has been in the business for years and his family still has a body shop in my small town here in Michigan.  So he agreed to help with the convertible and I delivered the car to his personal house after I checked with his wife who I knew since I worked for her father for 8 years when she was a teenager.  She agreed and the convertible was delivered.  4 years later I went to pick it up and although it was decent, the paint quality was not up to my standards.  Orange peel everywhere and I knew I could not live with it so it cost me another grand to have another body shop wet sand and buff to a acceptable shine.  I guess the point I'm getting to is  . . . if you can do it yourself, better do it.  No one cares about your ride like you do.  Once I got the paint where it was acceptable, I started in on the rest.  Thank god for Chryco and his skills as it went together quickly and is still running.

I'm with Burdar....I would just hang onto it and then come back to it. If you think about it you probably had this absolutely perfect car built up in your head. And then when it showed up and wasn't perfect, you're hopes were crushed. It's a natural reaction to just get rid of it. I think you will deeply regret it if you get rid of it. Give it some time and you'll probably be ready to get it going again.

Besides, you won't be able to sell it for anything near what you spent on it.

Depending on the dollar value lost, I would drive down there , maybe with a friend and get some of my money back, theft is theft and a face to face visit might help....take a bat.

I'm really sorry for your predicament. I agree with Burdar and Lemming. I would take some time to cool off, relax. Take your time to make your car what you want. There is just too much to enjoy once it's finished.

Sorry to hear about your disappointment with your new Challenger. The only thing that has me scratching my head, is I don't think there is enough of the story here for anyone one reading it to determine if "you got hosed". Obsviously you had a certain expectation, and paid money for a product that you feel you did not receive good value for. But anybody reading your comments  would need to know how much you paid in relation to the quality of work you recieved for it. If you wanted a show car, and paid for a show car, and recieved a driver quality, then you got hosed. If you paid for a driver quality resto and expected a show car, then nobody can say "you got hosed".  I can see the challenges associated with shops restoring cars, it is expensive and time consuming work, and the shop needs to add mark-up to make their living. I looked back at the restoration thread, and I can clearly see from the photos, that he was attempting to build a nice driver quality car. Now, if you paid $70K-$100k, you have every reason to be upset.

I've said it before, and i'll say it again....You can bend over, grease up in public, and 12 people will walk right past you. It's that 13th muthaf**ker that'll screw you simply because you let him/her..

Simple....There's only one way to insure this type thing doesn't happen anymore. Do it right, do it yourself.

Where are you located in Canada ?
There is probably people nearby to help , we all have some spare parts & may be able to help locate ones you are missing .
Al lot of the issues would seem to be easy to repair although steering & brakes probably will not . If you have a 70 R/T you should be able to get decent $$ for it but as with 4C said it is worth having these cars they are a blast once you get them sorted out . I would be willing to come & help if needed !

I am just east of Toronto.

I truly, truly, truly appreciate the offer of help. It proves to me that there are still decent people out there.

But, I think that I am going to put the car away for the winter and give it some thought as to where I go and from here.

Again thanks Chryco.
