tire jack when not lifting by bumpers

What is everyone using for a tire jack when not lifting the car by the bumpers?   I plan to lift under the front wheel lower control arms and in the rear by the axle housing just inboard of the leaf spring perch.  I have found a few import sissor jacks that fit under the lower control arm, but I don't trust them to lift the weight of an ebody.   Just looking for ideas.   thanks.

Go to a salvage yard and get a scissor jack from most any newer car/truck.  They will be able to lift the car just fine and they are compact so you can store them in the truck.  The old style jacks are dangerous.  Just use them for show.

I have a small scissor jack that was originally in a 92 Dakota.  If it is good enough for a truck, it will be more than strong enough for an E-body.

I agree , the scissor jacks are safer too by just lifting on the control arm or diff & not pulling the whole body up

Just be careful on what type of sissors jack you use. something out of a toyota/honda/hyundia just are not strong enough and bend real easy.  My guys like using the ones out of chebbie trucks out in the yard. They can take weight and dont flex.....

I have no spare, nor do I plan to carry one. One the height of my rears won't fit in the trunk, if it did it wouldn't clear the front. Don't want to put a spare for the front on the rear, it'll eat up my differential...If it goes down, just drag it home with my 100 mile tow.

Granted, it's a little bigger, but what about one of those 2 ton jacks?  The ones that cost like $20-$30?  Would imagine it's safer than a scissor jack.

If you're looking for a jack to carry in the car, I would look at Mercedes. They have real slick, super-compact jacks.

I'd say it depends on what car you get it from. If  you snag one from a CRX or Miata, yeah, id' be concerned. But these days a Mazda 3, Toyota Corolla or any other modern "mid size" is going to weigh as much or more than a vintage E body. Heck, my 94 Stealth, while a some what smaller car, weighs over 4200#, 800# more than my Challanger that is 20 years older.

I was thinking the same thing.  New cars are deceptively heavy.

I would also think that with today's 'sue first, ask questions later' mentality that just about any jack would be strong enough.  Lawyers have a way of incetivizing corporations...

I agree with Phil.

 I have a cheap 2 ton jack that I've used for years. Just a couple of pumps and it's up. Those scissor jacks you have to turn for a half hour.
