I myself am not a painter but was told when masking off do not adhere the leading edge of the tape fully. This then leaves an ever decreasing gap That will feather the primer and paint without the hard line edge.

why piece by piece?
the usual... space, time, money.
I am still doing "major" body work on some of the car.
currently do not have enough room to paint entire body at once.
Also have found using this panel by panel method,
"re-assembly" is never an issue, fitment, or scratching/chipping finish is eliminated
and are able to focus on each part with an obsessive level of detail.

killer weekend, all day everyday I worked on the cuda!
I got final body work done and painted front valance and insert,
header panel, both doors and rear valance.
 
just trunk lid top, grill, front bumper and roof/rear fenders/rockers left to go!

the paint dose come out better doing smaller areas! just use the same mix of reducer and the same air presser each time.,

I betcha a pearl or metallic would be tough that way!
