    The Vanishing point interview topic triggered me to start the inquiry that I already wanted to do for a while.

    As stated there, I'm planning a road-trip for late August/early September 2012.
    I want to bring my Challenger to the south west of the US and drive through Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada and Utah for a few weeks.

    I can imagine that I need some kind of permit to drive my European (in fact American  ;)) car on the US roads.
    Anybody out there who knows what I have to organize with the government(s) in advance to make my dream come true?

    What a cool adventure you’re planning!

    You would think that this would be an easy question to answer.  My coworkers and I discussed it for awhile and we’re not sure about all you legalities.
    So, I’m sending an email to a Mr McMnessor at Hemmings magazine.  They deal with importing/exporting cars all the tim3e.
    If I hear back from him, I will let you know

    That trip should be lots of fun! Make sure your cooling system's A-1, your going thru a HOT part of the country in August. BTW - great lookin' Chally!  :thumbsup: Sorry no other info............

    My guess on the easiest way would be to "sell" it to a person you trust very much in the US and have them register it here. Then they "sell" it back to you when you go home.

    Roland-
    Some information for your upcoming trip to the U.S..

    Open this link and scroll all the way down to the bottom of this page where it says “Driver’s Plates and Permits.”
    It seems to say that your driver’s license and car registration will be sufficient for a U.S. Visit.

    Also says that an “International Driving Permit would be a valuable asset...”

    Mr McNessor recommends that you should contact the national motoring club or vehicle registration entity in the Netherlands (Here we have AAA for instance) and double check.

    In my experience temporarily importing my car truck and trailer into Mexico to drive cross country, the more official looking paper work you had the better off you were.

    Customs people here and in other countries seem to like documents — licenses, ownership, inspections etc etc.

    Going from Houston to Denver; if your trip takes you north through Oklahoma, let me know.
    You have a couple of route choices – all with nothing to see for many hours;
    So, if your trip is to see nothing in Kansas, you’ll drive through Oklahoma City on the way (I-35 north)

    We need to start a fund to pay for all of the speeding tickets 66PaleRider is going to get here.

    You can use my Challenger for the trip as long as you show up early and set up my suspension to be an autobahn stormer.

    Sounds like a cool trip.

    Make sure you have enough insurance coverage as some states do not have mandatory insurance so you need uninsured motorist coverage.Some states are "no fault" so you need coverage for yourself and your car even if it`s not your fault.We are also sue happy over here so make sure your limits are high enough.
