Octane Booster
« on: November 24, 2011 - 05:53:22 PM »
Anybody recomend a good Octane booster. Had my GTX out for a little ride last weekend and filled it up with some 93 ethanol free gas and now she is pinging. I have the timing backed off already but I never had this problem before on regular 93. IS there someting about the ethanol free that I don't know about ??
Thanks

All the "octane" boosters that are commercially available are junk.  They say that they will raise the octane "points".  Which you think would be like 93 to 97 or such.  No, it only truly raises it more like 93 to 93.5.

If you do some google research on "Octane Booster Scams" you can get a more in depth knowledge about it.

Best thing to do is just get higher octane gas.

California changes our fuel blend in winter then back again in summer. Possibly your area does also. I'm not sure the actual effects on detonation related to seasonal changes but the the cooler air in winter definitely cause problems for marginal situations.

As a bonus from the state we only get 91 octane here and are amongst the highest price gasoline in the 48 states. At least they aren't forcing ethanol down our throats yet.

Some say AV 100 (at $5.50/gal) mixed 20% seems to do the trick. Also plenty of lead for the old school valve seats. It's not allowed for use on public roads though and could be suspect by the definitive smell when burned.
