440 HP exhaust leak on passenger side? Help!!!!
« on: November 26, 2011 - 06:52:57 PM »
Can someone help me with the torque sequence of the exhaust bolts. And should i do without the exhaust gaskets. I been using the Mr Gasket exhaust gaskets and still leaks. I read that most members dont use a gasket  and just applied copper silicone. Can someone confirmed or let me know what I should do to stop the exhaust leak.
Thanks

if you are using cast iron manifolds & they are flat I just use a thin layer of copper silicone & no gasket , they factory never used a gasket that I have seen on the big blocks , the 340s had a gasket to act as a heat shield to protect the ign wires with the high rise exhuast manifolds , it was a stamped steel gasket

FWIW, I had what I thought was a manifold or head pipe leak on the passenger side and tightened everything down I could find.  While the head pipe/manifold connection was a bit loose, cranking that down did not help the noise or exhaust gas situation.

What I finally traced it to was the stamped steel cup that sits in the intake manifold and surrounds the choke thermostat.  That gasket was wasted and exhaust from the intake manifold choke preheat (crossover) passage was leaking past the gasket.

I wound up getting a new steel cup and gasket, (the original cup was okay, but they frequently rust out) and installed it with some copper RTV.   I let it set up a couple of days and when I lit it off the next time, it was totally quiet.   It might be something worth checking out.

I was not interested in blocking off the crossover, as I want to keep a stock set up.  In fact, I still have a functional manifold hot air stove along with functional snorkel flaps, so the whole thing works as intended.

All my exhaust leaks stopped when I started using Permatex Ultra Copper on my exhaust gaskets.  I have used it with and without a gasket.  http://www.permatex.com/products/Automotive/automotive_gasketing/gasket_makers/auto_Permatex_Ultra_Copper_Maximum_Temperature_RTV_Silicone_Gasket_Maker.htm

Are you sure you don't have a cracked manifold?  The cast iron ones are prone to cracking between 6 & 8.  PK

Are we talking about stock manifolds or headers?

Can someone help me with the torque sequence of the exhaust bolts.

Torque sequence on anything will always be from the center towards the outside.  Following that, you will either see a circular pattern or a cross pattern...  The cross pattern is best for a circular bolt pattern (like wheel lugs).

The exhaust manifold nuts should be torqued to 30 ft-lbs.

Not that it would be fun taking off, but checking the mounting surface for level seems like a logical next step.  If you have a long enough steel straight edge ruler that would work or have a shop take a look at it.  The old iron manifolds also warped from time to time.

I had that problem where the mounting surface on the manifold was not perfectly flat.  Putting a straightedge on it showed tight on the ends and a slight bow ( about  1/32+  of an inch ) in the middle.  Once I got it all flattened out, the  exhaust leak and noise went away.
