I need to learn to weld
« on: November 29, 2011 - 01:18:08 AM »
I have a Miller 175 I use for sheet metal (which I'm not very good ) but need to weld a bunch of 1/8" to 1/4" steel angle and plate. Not sure if this Miller is the machine or not. Should I be looking at a stick welder? Any recommendations?

your Miller will do just fine. I bet you can burn some holes when you crank her up.  Make sure to use 0.8mm wire minimum  :2thumbs:

Mig is far better for heat control on thin metal , you find it a lot more difficult with a stick welder

Your machine will work great for 1/8 and 1/4.

With all the horror stories about body shops, I'd love to learn how to weld and do the trunk & floor pan repairs on my Barracuda myself.  My son took a welding class after high school and the instructor called him a lier when he said he'd never welded before!  Maybe I'll buy the welder and let him do it....   Let us know how it goes doing it yourself.  Good luck.
