    Vent Cables - Lessons Learned

    Graveyard Carz Tip of the Day: If you are restoring a Mopar that uses Vent cables, Temperature control cables or Heater/Defroster selector cables...look to see if they are in reproduction. If so, purchase and install them before you put the dash in. I had all the cables (original) working great in the 71 Charger six pack, when they were on the bench, but every one has subsequently broken. It's no fun replacing them after the dash is in. ~ Mark

    The above is from their FB.  I thought it was worth noting.
    Has anyone here had issues with installing cables? ie, them breaking?

    Did not brake on mine. Over the years I have removed the heater box and dash a couple of times.
    But it is hard to remove the oneway push-on retainers on both ends, especially at the heater controls.
    I would start removing the heater and defroster cables at the heater box. Remove the glovebox liner for better access.
    Then remove the vent cables from the dash.
    Then remove the dash and let the cables hang from the heater control. The heater box can be removed first also. Don't forget the fan connector on top of the heater box.
    After that you have got a full workout. No need to go to the gym! :bigsmile:

    Thanks for the helpful hints.
    I rebuilt the heater box two Decembers ago and have yet to put it back into the car.
    I have both new & OE vent/control cables.  Obviously, going to put as much as I can onto the heater box before reinstalling.
    Not looking forward to installing the other cables.

    Over the winter, I plan on redoing the dash & instrument panel.  I’ll take the seats out for easier access to under the dash.
    I’m 6 foot 6 inches, I really don’t like crawling under the dash with the seats in.

    Ron, I have asked in my own thread but not gotten too many responses so I thought I would ask you, sorry to hijack the thread for a moment. Not sure if the cables are the same for both Cuda and Challenger but I imagine so. I am trying to figure out which is the longer of the 2 vent cables. It appears from all I can find that the drivers is the long one but the guy I purchased from on eBay says the drivers is the short one, like he sent me. mine are both mounted below the ashtray with the passengers on the right. The drivers side has a cable that has been cut and it is still longer than the short side one I received. Any help would be appreciated.

    No prob with hijacking, it’s just another opportunity to learn  :cheers:.

    Doing a search here in C-C.com, I found a picture (from Burdar) and a schematic for cable mounting.
    Please see attached.

    Regarding Vent Cable lengths, at Mopar999.com it says:
    70 Cuda/Challenger RH Vent Cable measures 30.5" total length
    70 Cuda/Challenger LH Vent Cable measures 35" total length

    71-74 appear to use 36" drivers and 32" passengers side (thank you Cuda346PJK)

    BTW - Nice looking Cuda!  :ylsuper:  I've always liked Plum Crazy

    Cool, I appreciate it and also the tip to mopar999.com, another bookmark in my arsenal. Just to expand a little farther since mine is a 72 and the lengths you posted are specific to 70, the 71-74 appear to use 36" drivers and 32" passengers side. I will see if the ebay guy can come up with a drivers side to replace mine and if not I will order from mopar999 as I also need a heat/defrost cable.
