1971 Cuda Black Out Pictures
« on: December 02, 2011 - 12:38:36 PM »
I am looking for any pictures of what is suppose to be blacked out on the radiator support for a 71 Cuda, I have been searching sites and come up with some older post that the pictures are no longer available.

I think you can use a 70 or 71 Challenger as a guide if you can't find pics of a Cuda.  Since they all have dual headlights, the same basic areas should be the same.  The only blackout that a 71 car wouldn't have had is the cowl blackout.  That was a 1970 thing only...even then it wasn't done on all cars.

I found this picture on RestoRick's website but it looks amost too good.  The factory job was pretty sloppy.  I think the paint should fade out as it gets closer to the top of the rad support.

Thanks for the idea. Didn't realise the cowl was 70 only, don't have to worry about that now.

I know what you mean about the picture being too perfect. That is kind of where I am at trying to decide if I do everything like is in the picture or try to do it to be more correct to what the factory would have done. It is not an original car so I am not worried about 100% correct.

From what I read they used to have a guy standing in a sump under the car in the assembly plant with a sprayer hitting the cars from the bottom up. And the guy was no picasso!! Painted some all the way up the others half way!!

So if I give a spray boom to my 4 year old it should be correctly replicated

Correct!!, it does not have to be perfect. There was agreat article about it in Mopar muscle magazine or Mopar action not sure which edition I have it somewheres. With several examples of cowl supports from several mopars of different make and model. But we are all perfectionist and try to do it better and perfect. Human nature mine is no exception. It def looks better to have it blacked out!! than have the colors show through the grill which IMO steals from the facade.

Nope, thats just to highlight the front area, inner fenders are body color.

The inner wheel wells are sprayed with undercoating.  It was mainly for rock protection.  The fenders/quarters could easily be dented if a rock hit them.  Both the front and rear wheel wells were undercoated from the factory.

The only thing you need to black out are the rad support and the rocker pinch welds.  You can brush paint on the pinch welds or spray it.  Both ways have been found on survivor cars.  I sprayed both areas of my car with SEM Trim Black.

I thought everything below the rocker molding was black, is this the area you are talking about?

Most cars just had the pinch weld blacked out.  Overspray was permited on the horizontal section of the rocker but not from the bodyline up to the doors.  The exception would be the 71 Cudas with the rocker moulding.  Here's a pic of a 70 Challenger with the correct rocker blackout.  Your's would go all the way up to the rocker moulding.
