To AAR or Not? (Now with PICS)
« on: January 19, 2005 - 12:12:55 AM »
Hey guys, just looking for opinions.  I'm real anxious to really get started on my car but until funds become available I'm kind of stuck in the planning stages.  My car is a 70 barracuda, originally a 318 auto car.  It will definately be a clone of some type, still trying to decide between a Cuda or AAR clone.  I know some will say to put it back to original but I have no interest in this.  We (my Dad) already have an original, numbers matching 70 Hemi roadrunner and a original 68 GTX 440 convert so this one (the Cuda) will just be buillt the way I want, not worried about originallity --- to a point.  Up until now I thought I would just build a big block (440 or RB stroker) cuda with the ralleye hood I already have, etc.  Now I'm leaning towards an AAR clone.  What do you guys think of this plan:  B5 blue with AAR hood, stripes, and spoiler, rear exhaust (I'm not a real fan of the side exhaust although I do have a original set - if I go this route will probably get a flat AAR rear valence painted when I get the car done in case I do ever change my mind and want to run the side exhaust though) 17 inch torque thrust 2's and a 416 (340) stroker with either a Keisler ($$$) or just an 833.  While I would run headers, aluminum heads and intake, etc I would try to make the engine compartment look as stock as possible i.e. plain painted valve covers, 340 six pack pie tin (with single carb baseplate) I guess my goal would be to have a car that looked basically stock, bigger wheels, the exhaust I like, somewhat stock looking engine compartment, correct looking engine (340) - but quick with the stroker.  I know in the end I have to build the car the way I like but your opinions will help.  btw, I won't really try to pass the car off as an AAR, if someone asks I'll just tell them what it really is, kind of a new age AAR I guess- maybe something like chrysler would have built if the big wheels, and stroker setups were available in 70 :grinyes:  What do you guys think???  Thanks for the input, Tyler

Well, I'd say I'm impartial to the AAR idea.  Those cars looked awesome and either way you go, It'll be one nice ride!

I agree with all of the above - AAR all the way.
I feel I've seen some pretty rare cars at shows, and have yet to see an AAR ( seen them in a few museums ).

Those cars sure are wicked, not a bad idea to make a clone of my own.

I'd do the AAR too.  What about a six pack set up on it too?  I love the way they sound openning up.

Are you going to do an original AAR where you clone to factory specs or do you just want the look of an AAR on your custom ride. Burpin is partial to the custom cudas. Burpin has seen some wicked stuff out there and that is the way Burpin is going.

PS if you clone to factory specs you will spend way too much money and time on something that will never be real. Burpin thinks you want a custom cuda that looks like an AAR.

I would choose the AAR idea.  I love the side pipes and all the flat black!

If you do an AAR...use a small block motor. I prefer small block motors in AAR clones. AAR's were about handling (orig built for SCCA) so the small block is the way to go.

Just my .02!
