Windshield wiper problem
« on: December 03, 2011 - 02:15:33 PM »
1971 'Cuda variable wiper:

The windshield wiper turns on and sweeps, when you turn it off, it just stops where ever it is.  It does not return and park.  I had this same thing happen 25 years ago.  I took the car to a local auto electric "mom and pop" shop and they keep the car for 6 weeks and could not figure it out.  When I got the car back, I took it down to the local dealer.  One of the guys that worked in the service department was a 'Cuda nut.  He owned 3 or 4 'Cudas and was the shop's E-body expert.  He had my wipers fixed in one afternoon.  I know that the first guys replace the switch in the dash and it did not help.  I also believe that the wiper motor was NOT replaced.  I don't remember it costing very much to fix.  I was in school at the time and was on a budget from only working a part time job.

Anyone have any ideas?  It is doing it again.

My understanding is this is not an uncommon problem.  You should check out this vendor's thread as they rebuild/replace a lot of wiper motors :)

Yeah, I kind of skimmed through that thread.  It seemed like a lot of business transactions and showing good work results.  I really didn't want to clutter up that thread with my questions.

Is this something that I can fix myself if I pull this thing apart?

I'm not a sponsor on the forum any longer but that is a fairly easy fix on the "no park" situation.  Usually the problem is not with the switch, etc., it's the reverse side of the switch plate and the contacts

Sorry for the newbie question  :-[ but, is this switch plate on the dash switch or in the wiper motor?

I don't think that is a bad question.   I'd like to know also.

Seems like when I had this same  problem 20 years ago,  they changed my dash switch with no help.

My memory may have faded a bit over the years.

I'm sorry...switch plate = gear housing cover   Sometimes I forget that what I call something is sometimes confusing because others call it something else.  I think it's a matter of me speaking "blondinese" at times    :cooldancing:

And now my turn. Is the switch plate repairable or is it a replace item?

There is a ground wire on a speed nut next to the switch in the dash, it's over looked. Mine (1974 2 speed) has the motor harness unplugged so it won't happen again.   :violin:     Just in case the switch is touched.
