What is this switch for?

A couple of questons. I seem to have an extra switch on my panel. Anyone know what it's for? There is also a cuda emblem on the ashtray should it be there? Should it be painted black (see picture)?

The extra switch is usually for a rear defogger
or convertable top

It is a hard top. And there are no signs that there was ever a rear window defogger. It may have been taken out of another E body

How does it toggle ? is it a three way toggle or two way toggle ?

When you switch it up, does it only click once going up and once going down or does it have stationary center position, to me it looks like a two way toggle, up and down only.

I have three '73 switch panels with that switch. All are marked  "REAR DEFOG". Interestingly, two of those cars did not have the rear defog blower. Dash swaps I guess.

It is a two way. On and off.

Just a guess but maybe fog light switch?

It would be a rear defog switch, do you have a rear defog unit in your car ? If not, i know who you can contact to complete your rear defog unit if you are missing any of it at all, as you do have the switch and it is a cool option, no pun intended

That 'Cuda emblem is interesting. 

Is it fit into a recess on the ashtray?

No the emblem just looks like it is glued on. I did a little more looking and it is a three position switch and the harness that was plugged into it is for a rear window defogger, acording to the wire diagrams in the factory manual. What does the rear defogger look like and where does it mount? Should there be a fender tag code for that option?

That is the correct location for either a convertible or rear defogger switch.  All of the switch panels in later years had the hole for that switch.   If the switch was not needed the wood grain piece covered the hole.

H31 is the code for a rear defogger but I am not sure if it was on the fender tag or if it only appears on broadcast sheets.

From the inside, the defog vent shows up in between where the rear speakers would be. Tthe blower for the defog ends up being underneath the package tray, where a speaker would go. Bolts up to the same holes.
