On/Off Switch on driver's side fender in engine bay?
« on: December 04, 2011 - 01:01:20 AM »
I noticed this switch today and wondered what it does. As it is not hooked up (loose cable), nothing happens when I flip it. What's it for?

Possibly a hood sensor for an old alarm system, or a switch for a hood light?  Does not look stock.

Possibly a homemade kill switch or underhood light?  People did weird things back then.  2 of my Challengers had keyed electric switches presumably for alarms or a kill switch.  One was in the front grille between the headlights and the other was hidden in the wheel well.  Both long since have been cut and disabled.
Yes I own a 1972 Dodge Challenger Convertible T/A S/E with a 440 Six Pak. Can it get any more wrong?

Ok, thanks, so it's not stock. If that was a kill-switch that would be a great place; the car doesn't ignite, so the thief pops the hood and sees that switch but disregards it because he thinks that this possibly can not be the kill switch because it's in plain sight. :ylsuper:

Thanks guys!

My guess is it`s a kill switch I had a similar toggle switch under the dash on an old Camaro I had. It caused me nothing but trouble  :pullinghair: and was the first thing I got rid of.
On a side note I replaced my fusible link with an inline fuse and remove the fuse when i`m away from home or wont be driving my car for any length of time. Sort of acts like a poor man`s kill switch and doesn`t give me headaches!

So that is a self installed switch in the hood pin mounting hole.  Where do the wires run?

I'll guess it's a switch for an under hood light.    :dunno:

Have to check thoroughly, I only grabbed one about 8" long cable with a loose end which seems to run to the switch, but it's all beneath that fender part and I have to try to peer under it.

The di-lithium crystals may start to break down! It may also be a safety for the warp drive, so be careful!!

I have now flipped the switch to the ON position, next time I drive over 50 I'll go back and tell the owner not to install this switch without manual. :grinyes:
