Finding the vin with the last 6 digits of the VIN
« on: December 04, 2011 - 09:26:16 AM »
I was talking to a guy down here yesterday with a 70 Challenger that he picked up a few years ago.
The dash was out of the car when he bought it but it's gone missing since then. He can't find the registration for the car, and there's no fender tag, but the cowl and rads support numbers are there.
Is there a way to find the full VIN of the car with only those numbers or is he going to have to get a new state VIN?
The car has sub frame connectors and torque boxes, front and rear sway bars, a 4 speed hump, a Dana, duct work for AC along with a couple of other things.

He'd like to restore it since the body is in pretty good shape, but he would like to have it back to original so he'd like to know the specifics.

The VIN is on a sticker inside the driver's side door. See if that sticker is still there.

That's a tough one.
You might get lucky and have a full vin stamp on the engine or tranny, but probably not.

Without the vin, fender tag, or broadcast sheet the guy is gonna have to get a state vin issued.

I suggest he look a little harder if he had the dash in his hands already.

Well if the Engine is numbers matching you can get some of the digits (taken from http://www.degeneratepress.com/newport/vin66-74.htm#1970):

First Digit = Carline:
J = Challenger

Second Digit = Price Line (Someone might know how to calculate this based on the engine/other options):
E - Economy
L - Low
M - Medium
H - High
P - Premium
S - Special
K - Police
T - Taxi
N - New York Taxi

Some of those do not apply to the challenger line.

Third and fourth digits = body style
21 - 2 door sedan or coupe
23 - 2 door hardtop
27 - Convertible
29 - 2 door sports hardtop
41 - 4 door sedan
43 - 4 door hardtop
45 - 6 passenger station wagon
46 - 9 passenger station wagon

Not sure which of those apply in 70, obviously not the 4* codes

Fifth digit = engine
B - 198 1-1BBL 6 Cylinder "G" engine
C - 225 1-1BBL 6 Cylinder "RG" engine
E - Special Order 6 Cylinder engine
G - 318 1-2BBL 8 Cylinder "LA" engine
H - 340 1-4BBL 8 Cylinder "LA" engine (High Performance)
J - 340 3-2BBL 8 Cylinder "LA" engine (High Performance)
K - 360 1-2BBL 8 Cylinder "LA" engine
L - 383 1-2BBL 8 Cylinder "B" engine
N - 383 1-4BBL 8 Cylinder "B" engine (High Performance)
R - 426 2-4BBL 8 Cylinder "RB" engine (Hemi)
T - 440 1-4BBL 8 Cylinder "RB" engine
U - 440 1-4BBL 8 Cylinder "RB" engine (High Performance)
V - 440 3-2BBL 8 Cylinder "RB" engine (High Performance)
Z - Special Order 8 Cylinder engine

Sixth digit = model year
0 - 1970

Seventh Digit = Assembly Plant
B - Hamtramck, Michigan
E - Los Angeles, California

Other options didn't apply for the Challenger

No sticker on the door, but I told him about the other places to look. His parts storage area is pretty small, but really well organized so he knows the dash isn't there. He's going to get me the cowl/rad support numbers today when he comes over to drool over my Challenger

   Very interesting....

Maybe Email Barry Washington and see if he has any documentation/buildsheets for it.  :dunno:

Well, the first digit will be a "J" for shure. (Challenger). The second digit will be "H" or "S". Here is my suggestion. Determine what is your engine.
 6 cyl=C, 318=G, 340=H, 383-2=L, 383HP=N, 440-4=U, 440-6=V and Hemi=R. Now, knowing that the smallest engine available in a Challenger R/T
was a 383HP, if your engine is a 318, you'll know that your second digit will be ''H'', (non R/T).  On the other end, if the engine is a 440, that means you
have an R/T, so the second digit will be ''S" (JH=Non R/T, JS=R/T). But that's assuming the sequential number on the engine is BO 265408, (your
sequantial number on the shell). The third digit (number of doors) will be "2" for shure, and the fourth digit will be "3" for hardtop OR "7" for convertible.
Sixth digit will be "0" (1970 model year) and we know your plant code, (seventh digit) is "B". Tell me what is the engine and if it matches the sequential
number on the shell. The sequantial number on the engine can be found on the passenger side of the block, at the very bottom, along the oil pan,
about half way. If it matches the sequential number on the shell, you will be able to determine the beginning of the VIN. If the sequence on the block
doesn't match the one on the shell, I' d say you' re in trouble. For exemple, let' s say you have determine the sequantial number on the block matches
the one on the shell, and you have also determine that your engine is a Hemi, your vin would read as JS23R0B265408. (assuming it' s a hardtop). It
woulb be JS27R0B265408 if it' s a convertible. If its a 318, 340 or 383-2 bbl, that means the car isn't a R/T and the VIN will begin with JH23 (or 27).
One more thing. Small  blocks have usually the cubic inch stamps on the  driver side of the block with large number, while 383s have a machined surface
below the distributor where it will read 383 or 383HP. 440s have a machine surface on front of the block, between the the intake manifold and water pump
where it should have the number 440HP stamped. If it is a six pack, it will only reaf 440HP, not sure how to determine if it's a 6 pack or not, (a six pack
manifold might have been add on a 440-4 engine). Also, there were a small amout of non R/T cars that came with a 383HP. So if you have a
383 or 440, it might get a bit tricky, but if you have a 318, that should be easy to clear that up, again, assuming the sequantial number on the block matches the one on the shelle If you have more questions, feel
free to ask and if I can help, I' ll be happy to do so. Have a nice day.  Robert

Another thing. As i was reading your original post again, you' re talking about having A/C parts. Keep in mind that Hemis and six packs, (including T/As), were not available with A/C

He took a look at the engine that came with the car and it's date coded for late 70. He's been hunting for any paperwork around his house but still hasn't found anything. I checked on Barry's site to see if there was anything on his lists, but there was nothing there. Until I know if there's anymore info my friend can come up with, I didn't want to bug Barry.
I asked all the Mopar people I know down here to see if anyone has any ID for the car sitting around.

He really has to check the sequence number along the oil pan to see if it matches the sequence on the shell. What is the engine size?  The 4th digit could be a 9 (SE model). The SE have a smaller rear window and an overhead consolette.   Robert

It's a 440, but it doesn't match the car. It's not an SE, but it has framerail connectors and torque boxes. The car has been in Puerto Rico for a long time, so the chances of finding the fender tag is actually pretty good.
