Upper steering column bearing
« on: December 05, 2011 - 03:39:33 PM »
Hey guys,
just a quick question regarding the upper steering column bearing:
The ones I can find for sale online all say 70-71 E body.
Did they change the bearing for the later years? I don't think they did, but thought I'd check here first.

Also, where there any changes to the steering column over the years? My 73 cuda has a 70 challenger dash and instrument panel, maybe it's got a 70 column as well...

Cheers,
Aaron

There are some differences but I really don't know much about the internals.  I know 1970 had a different key light arrangement.  1970's also had a shift lockout on the column that later years didn't have.

Upper bearing is the same for all years. The lower had a few versions, depending on if it was bolted in
with 2 or three bolts. The 74 column uses a totally different bearing set-up with a spring
and retaining circlip.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

Also 71-74 have a different key release mechanism.

Bearing is the same.  You can still get it from Dodge.  Just not the rubber surrounds for it.

I recently bought a entire 74 column just for that lower bearing setup... and it didn't even have the spring... still trying to find that spring.

Almost everything else can be bought easily.

I have 5 e-body columns and a bunch of charger and dart ones for parts.  They almost all interchange.

Aaron and Ryan,
I hunted throught my spare/unused parts and found these? The steering column bearing is from a 70 Challenger column shift? I can measure it if need be. Ryan/ Aaron is this what you need? If so it's yours just PM me where to ship it?

Thank you

Ah I see the confusion.

I need the spring setup from a 74 E-bodie lower Bearing.  It is a 1 year only setup and I have yet to find the spring.  But I got the bearing.

Thanks though!
