Console Ash Tray
« on: December 08, 2011 - 04:16:10 PM »
I'm not sure if this is incorrect or just the way it was.  My ash tray pops out very easily.  In fact if you try to open it, the whole piece will typically pop out rather than open.  It's almost like the tray is a little too small for the opening?  Or maybe some piece is missing?
This is what it looks like

That's the correct one.  It's the same one that Tony's parts sells.  My original one popped out easily too.  There are some tabs on the trim piece that can be bent to put more tension on the ash tray.

I bought a new one from Tony's.  It's OK but doesn't fit as nicely as the OE one.  The trim piece on the original one is curved to match the contour of the console.  The new part is just flat.  It looked really bad until I bent it a little.  It looks better now.

Are you sure?  :dunno:   Looks smaller like the one for the rear quaters on the SE model I think? I'm no expert though? :grinno:

I have same problem. Apparently it's a design flaw. :-)

What I did was wrap a piece of black tape around the ashtray. You can't see it when it's installed and it sticks much more securely.

Also, as a bonus, the damn thing doesn't rattle anymore. ;-)

Well it's looking like I might need to re-dye the console anyhow ...there's a light chalky spot near the front that's too large to hide.  Gonna drive me nuts if I don't take care of it :)

The tape idea is a good one.  Simple, anyone can do it and it fixes the problem.  My original one isn't usable.  The lid is dented in from kids resting their feet on that section of the console.  I wonder who that could have been?  :sadwavey: :walkaway:

The picture is an optical illusion.  The ash tray is farther away from the camera so it looks really small.

I guess I'll try some tape when I get to putting the whole thing back together :)
