Alternator pulley removal help

Does anyone have any tips on removing a double pulley? It is a press on pulley, and for the life of me I cannot get it to budge (AT ALL).   :pullinghair:

And yes I have tried it with my pulley puller and prying but it still won't budge.   :stomp: I don’t have a hydraulic press, or excess until Monday.

Can I heat the pulley, without damaging the internals of the Alternator?

It's not quite the best for your puller, but usually an impact can do a pretty good job at stuff like this. Also try a few raps with a hammer. A little heat won't hurt anything, I bet it gets 200* under the hood just fine.

Thanks Goody!  I saw that the dealer uses a specialty puller, and thats why mine may not be working that well.

Yeah I beat it with a hammer pretty good, bent the pulley, good thing I am not reusing that one, but it won't move.

I would wait untill you can press it off,those pulleys are generally pretty tight, but you might get lucky with some heat but heat will transfer thru the shaft an gets pretty hot could dry out the bearings  :2cents:

I you don`t re use the pulley, why not cut it off?  Make a cut ( not into the axle)  and attack it with a chisle. I bet a blow or two will make it fall right off.

Dutch, cutting it off will be my last line off trying, but I am not ruling it out.

Ron, I don't know what type of puller you're using, but if it"ll hook up solidly, I'd snug it up, give it a good rap with a brass hammer and then put a 1/2" impact gun on it. Give the gun a snort of air tool oil before you hit it. Failing that. make a wee shroud from a piece of tin to shroud the armature and case and using the cutting tip of a gas torch-(lots of heat, quickly) heat the puller dull red and THEN hit it with the impact. A water soaked rag will quickly cool down the shaft before you cook the bearings. Support the weight of the alternator on the pulley when you hit it or you'll drive 'er out the back side, and it won't charge worth a damn after that! Good luck!  :thumbsup:

Thanks Jimynick!  Right know my compressor is on the fritz (broken) so I was using my electric impact on it.  I found a local alternator shop, and I am going to take it to them on Monday and have them remove it.

It took the shop a half hour to get the pulley off.  They said it was one of the toughest one they had!

But the good news is it OFF!  :clapping:  :woo:
