AM 8-track (Code R22), how does it look?

It seems original AM 8-track radios are worth a lot today (saw a restored one go for ~700$ on eBay lately), so I'm curious as my car has the R22 fender tag (AM w/ 8-track) as well. Should this be the radio with cassette player with the 4 thumbwheels or were there other models available? Because my car has a Clarion one, which to me looks era-correct but it definitely is not the thumbwheel one (see attachment). Was this one changed a long time back or did the cars come with models like these from factory?

   Yup, hemiken posted the factory 8 track deal.  As far as casette players go, I think the only ones are ones that attached to the top of the console under the dash with a microphone (No, this was not a predacessor to karaoke!)



I have a period 8 track under dash deal that came with the car.  I still works, just needs some TLC...

Thanks guys! Wow, helmiken, that sure looks nice! Now I wonder, though, if my car is supposed to have the 8-track, then it should have a different dash bottom, one where the cassette slot would fit. So this part must also have been replaced at one point...

Sure looks like it's going to be an expensive resto if I was to re-fit the 8-track.

Hey Padawan, the other thing you will find with your car is that it is a 1970 Challenger.................. This means that it has a one year only lower dash part that is exclusive to the 1970 Challenger and will fit no other car, very rare in deed.

  In that picture you posted, there is no rod to change tracks on the 8-track. Is that trim piece a custom job?

Stuff the original owner put on in the 70's.  Period correct.  Should I keep it on?   

You don't want to see what's on top of the dash....just think the 70's....    I have to comb it every so often...

You will not need any special faceplate as the standard radio and 8 track share the same face plates, you will need the special one year only 8 track dash bezel 1970 Challenger only part.
