I have read that someone showed a brand new 1970 Challenger body at SEMA that will sell for around $20,000. Ok I also understand that new fenders, hoods, bumpers, and so forth are also available or will be shortly so lets say I buy a new body, slap those new fenders, hood bumpers etc on it, then I buy a rusted out hulk of a 1970 Chally have the engine, tranny and differential rebuilt, have the upholstery redone, have the suspension rebuilt, buy all new brakes, lines, and suspension parts, then build the car with all this stuff and finally swap the VIN tag, restamp the cowl, radiator support and inside the left 1/4 panel lip. According to the title I have for this car I own a 1970 Challenger VIN # so and so and a VIN check of the car by the local police shows that this car's VIN is indeed the car listed on the title. I assume the purist would say that this car is not a legitimate 1970 Cahllenger.
Scenario 2. I buy a rusted out hulk of a 1970 Chally, have the car dipped, and I replace both doors, both 1/4 panels and wheelhouses inner and outer, both fenders, the roof, the entire floor, both rocker panles, the trunk lid, both the front and rear valance panels, the taillamp panel and the core support. I have the engine, tranny and differential rebuilt have the car reupholstered etc, etc. Now which of these is the "real" Chally?
