Brand New 1970 Challenger Bodies
« on: December 11, 2011 - 02:39:48 PM »
I have read that someone showed a brand new 1970 Challenger body at SEMA that will sell for around $20,000.  Ok I also understand that new fenders, hoods, bumpers, and so forth are also available or will be shortly so lets say I buy a new body, slap those new fenders, hood bumpers etc on it, then I buy a rusted out hulk of a 1970 Chally have the engine, tranny and differential rebuilt, have the upholstery redone, have the suspension rebuilt, buy all new brakes, lines, and suspension parts, then build the car with all this stuff and finally swap the VIN tag, restamp the cowl, radiator support and inside the left 1/4 panel lip.  According to the title I have for this car I own a 1970 Challenger VIN # so and so and a VIN check of the car by the local police shows that this car's VIN is indeed the car listed on the title.  I assume the purist would say that this car is not a legitimate 1970 Cahllenger.

Scenario 2.  I buy a rusted out hulk of a 1970 Chally, have the car dipped, and I replace both doors, both 1/4 panels and wheelhouses inner and outer, both fenders, the roof, the entire floor, both rocker panles, the trunk lid, both the front and rear valance panels, the taillamp panel and the core support.  I have the engine, tranny and differential rebuilt have the car reupholstered etc, etc.  Now which of these is the "real" Chally?

The purists would say neither is a real 1970  Challenger but the first senerio is illegal in most places while the second is not in most places. ( I think anyhow?)

It is also a FEDERAL CRIME to swap VIN tags.

A lot of "gray" area to both scenarios as to what is legal and how much of the original shell is left and laws varies by state. The federal law states it is a crime to swap vin tags if there is "intent to fraud" which is again open to interpretation.

I don't see any gray area with scenario 1...looks illigal to me.

Number 2, you should have bough a better car to start with!!!!

Scenario 1 would require a new, state issued VIN to be legal, but there is so much gray area related to VINs that your ONLY source of information should be YOUR state DMV/Police.

My friend who restores cars always has a police officer come witness what he does when he removes/attaches a VIN tag, like he did for my car when I bought a new replacement dash pad several years ago.

Do yourself a favor and do your own research into this matter rather than asking for opinions/advice.  You will get a hundred answers, many of which could be right or wrong depending on how you look at it.

P.S.  The guys you are looking for are Dynacorn, but I have yet to actually see the Challenger body on the market.  They have been saying for 5 years that it's almost ready to come out.  I think what they had at SEMA was a compilation of all the individual parts they sell, basically assembled as a complete body, and marketed as such, but still not for sale.

I will be in Taiwan next month at the factory where the sheet metal for the new Challenger bodies is being stamped.  I'll update everyone once I get back.   :2thumbs:

The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

Cool.  Just a thought, but I wonder if they have had everything ready to go, but have not been able to get the license from Chrysler to sell it as a complete body?

A very good guess, but not what's going on with this Challenger body.  I can't say the exact details, but I will let everyone here know first once I get back.  This trip is 100% to do with the Challenger body.
