I'm IN, New to the Forum, Old man to Cuda's
« on: December 12, 2011 - 01:37:15 PM »
Hi all,

I am new to the forum and I am joining becasue I need sopme help from time to time.  I have owned two 1970 Barracuda's over the years.  First was an Orange 318 Grand Coupe I owned from 1982 to 1986 when it was totaled while it was parked.  No one wanted to fix them then and they were only worth a $1,200 at the time.  My current 1970 Barracuda I purchased while in the Navy in Seattle, Wa. in 1989.  It was a 318 car at the time, but has had many upgrades over the years, including a 440.

The car has beed sitting on stands for over 5 years n by arage while my friend was helping me replace the only rusted part of the car, the trunk.  I have some old shots on YouTube locared at http://www.youtube.com/user/gsxjimg?feature=mhee  I only started her a few weeks ago, and I am now movated to finishing her.  Only issue is Time and the fact that I am not a body man.  I am trying to fighre out how to wels the inner trunk pannels and how to cut and weld in a new outer fender.

Question:  I first want to fit the tank and I have to cut a hole in the new trunk pannels to fit the fill tube.  Does anyone have a templet where the hole belongs?  How do we cut it, with a plasma torch or a hole saw?

I can't help with location, but investing in an air nibbler would be
a great idea. Much less damage and no warpage. And welcome to the site.  :2thumbs:
If I cant fix it, it's broke

Welcome!!  My body man just eyeballed it using the filler neck and used a air tool with a cutting blade to cut the hole. It came out fine.  'Course the gas tank had already been installed.  Doesn't have to be perfect as the rubber boot will cover the hole.  Good luck and remember  :useless:

Welcome

The trunk floor is a pretty common rust casualty.  You might have some luck just looking through the restoration threads and checking out some pictures.

OR, you COULD buy the 1 piece AMD panel and have ALL the holes punched already where they should be. Just sayin' and as for the outer whlhouse, that's going to be a sow with the 1/4 on. You can try to get it in place, but it registers on the inr AND the 1/4, so you may also have to slice it up a bit to jam it in.To put it in complete, you have to split it from the inr AND the inr supports. But, it's rare to need an otr. wheelhse and not need a 1/4 and trunk extension, so if you find the 1/4 needs replacing, your troubles are gone. Kind of a Phyric victory.  :2cents:

That's a nice bit of measuring Mike! I'll try to remember you did it when it's time for me to drill the holes for my exhaust hangers. Thx.

The floor is indentated where the hangar top mounts go. No real science needed where to drill.
