suggest a cam for me!
« on: December 13, 2011 - 01:29:11 AM »
ive called summit 3 times to help me choose a cam thats right for my setup and all 3 times i ended up with something different...

i have a 340TA
10:1 CR
equal length tube headers
road demon 625
rpm air gap
4spd manual
4.10 rear

my current cam: Sig Erson 286 246@.050 .510 lift is just way huge, i cant get it dialed in right and it only makes 10" at idle and my brakes hardly work....

i just want a mild cam thats easy to tune, with good vac so my brakes will work! and that doesnt run out of poop if i spin the motor up, but with a nice wide tq curve since i can pick and choose what rpm to cruise at.
keep in mind this is going to be a daily driver... and will go 135 miles per week (a 27 mile round trip 5 days a week) to get to work and back. I know its laughable but mpg has a small role in cam choice but i dont mind sacrificing a mpg or two for some extra umph (if i have a mpg or two to spare :P )

the 4.10 gears might come out for something a little taller since i do travel a bit on the highway occasionally - the nearest big city is a 45min drive on the highway... maybe a 3.73 ( i think i have one )

here are the cams that summit has reccomended

SUM-1789:
272 int./272 exh. Advertised
1,500-5,200
216 int./216 exh. Duration
0.454 int./0.454 exh.
110 Lobe sep.
description: Fair idle, good low midrange power. Largest stock engine cam, but works best with 9:1 and higher compression and gearing.

Comp Cams Xtreme Energy 20-223-3
268 int./280 exh.
1,600-5,800
224 int./230 exh.
0.477 int./0.480 exh.
110 Lobe sep.
description: Hydraulic-Great for Street Machines, largest cam for stock converter, 273-318 works best with 2000 stall.

Lunati Voodo 60401
256 int./262 exh.
1,000-5,500
213 int./220 exh.
0.454 int./0.475 exh.
112 Lobe sep.
description: Best mild performance cam. Works excellent in fuel injection applications with performance chip. Makes approximately 19 vacuum at idle. Great for performance oriented marine applications and heavy towing applications. Perfect Street Rod cam. Has slightly noticeable idle.

Also based on my own searching around I would also consider:

Lunati Voodo 60402
262 int./268 exh.
1,400-5,700
220 int./226 exh.
0.475 int./0.494 exh.
112 Lobe sep.
description: Mid-level performance street cam with excellent drivability. Works well with stock type exhaust manifolds and dual plane intake with mild 4 bbl carb. This is an awesome 4X4 and performance marine cam where dry exhaust is used. Improved valve springs and roller rockers recommended.

Comp Cams Magnum Muscle
268 int./276 exh.
1,800-5,800
222 int./226 exh.
0.464 int./0.464 exh.
110 Lobe sep.

That lunati 60402 looks like the best power cam.  That cam looks hungry!! I bet the vacuum not that bad either.

:iagree:

The 60402 seems like it would be a good cam for your application.  I wouldn't go with anything less than 112deg LSA (to keep your vacuum up for the brakes).

The 60401 would be a safe bet for sure.
mmmmm.... Mopar.... *drool*

good call on contacting lunati directly. just got off the phone with them and their tech helped me pick out one... he said to get the 60402 - hands down - no contest. its the best for what i want to do - daily driver with an occasional run for its money in the hills. and ill be setting up the suspension to turn well after i get the engine dialed in... told him going in a straight line is boring!
also he says my economy should be fairly close to stock with a smoothe idle that sounds mean. the best feature of this cam he states is how smooth the roll-on throttle and quick the response is. with a manual trans, i think ill like that!
