aftermarket brake reviews? wilwood, baer etc
« on: December 14, 2011 - 06:53:55 PM »
I tried searching for any reviews on the board but couldn't find any.  I bought Dr Diff's econo rear disc conversion (to mach my 73's front discs) but I haven't installed it and I am now considering going with something after market front and back.  Please give a good description of your setup (size, part #'s, minimum wheel size if other than stock) along with where you bought it and what your impressions are.  I'm personally looking for information on systems for stock style suspension (stock 73 front disc spindle and 8 3/4 rear end) however I can imagine some people with these systems probably have aftermarket suspension as well, so I guess just list what you have.

Sorry if there is already a thread on this, please just leave a link to it.

Thanks,
Dave

I used Viper calipers on C-Body spindles, 15" rims. One issue with some aftermarket calipers is that they don't have seals to keep dirt and water out.
Here is a link to what I did?  http://www.cuda-challenger.com/cc/index.php?topic=73985.0
Lots of guys with aftermarket stuff in here.... http://www.protouringmopar.com/
AR engineering makes a kit that used Viper calipers and a drum spindle and other aftermarket set ups..

I am thinking of going with this set up from All Time racing, Good guys out in California that put on some of the Spring Fling fun at Willow Springs each year.
I have been going this direction because I want to stay with the 15" wheels, But still have brakes.

Looks good! Any specs on the caliper? Who makes it? Wonder what the pads look like?
PS the rims look nice too! :clapping:

Dave, If I were in your shoes and willing to jump up to at least a 17" rim I would jump on the Baer kit that is for sale here in the classifieds. You won't find a better deal on a front bake kit of that level of performance. The rear kit you have from Dr. Diff uses Mustang Cobra calipers. They are going to give as much performance as a Wilwood rear brake.
If you are looking at staying with a 15" whel than I would go with the b-body spindle/Viper kit or an E-body/Viper caliper kit. I have an Alter-k-tion that uses Mustang II style spindles and use a Wilwood 12.9" Dynalite 4 piston caliper and my rear kit uses the same caliper with 12.9" rotors. I recently scored a never used Wilwood 13" 6 piston Super Lite caliper "big brake" kit for about $800 of of what a new kit costs.
Utilize the for sale sections of here, Moparts, Protouring Mopar, FABO, or other Mopar sites. Every once in a while you can find slichtly used or never used kits for cheap. You have to jump on those kind of deals.

I'd actually like to go up to 17" wheels but I'm having trouble finding wheels that aren't too expensive and won't require 1" spacers.  I know a number of people on here have these aftermarket brake set ups but it seems like most people are still building their cars.  That's why I was trying to get some feed back on performance.  I might be going with this used Baer setup, I've only heard good things about Baer.  :)

Thanks for everyone's responses.  I've seen those All Time Racing calipers before when I was searching for options, those are pretty cool but a little too expensive for me.  I guess if I get sucked into vintage road racing that'll be the ticket but for now almost any of these kits should be fine.

I've also got Hydroboost too. I think it made the biggest difference. I like Vintage Wheel Works for the price and quality. THey're American made and have a timeless look. 17's in all kinds of widths.
That rear SVT Cobra caliper is a pretty good brake and are, in fact, helluva lot better than my name brand rear brakes.

I guess I'll dig through those other websites.  The Baer system in the for sale section is an older style.  I'm gonna have to do more research into it before I decide if it's a good fit for my car.

Anyone else?

Thanks,
Dave

The performance of a 17" and choice of tires is reason enough. I ended up choosing the Baer track set up. 13" rotors. Fills up a 17" nice. They stop very effectively. I run these canyons all the time,Never a problem. But I wish the rears matched. (single piston) I was gonna score those used ones and fab. Them on.  It's a C5 Vette unit. Full seals. Easy install. I like them.  My friends have commented on them while holding on for dear life.
They recommend a rear prop valve. Not a real big deal. I ended up opening it all the way.

Hats came completely ready to go packed and all! In cool little plastic containers.

Parking break is easy. I'm picky,And they have never let me down. Black finish really hides the dirt too. Well worth the cost.   :2cents: R/T

Do you have some picks of your set up ? I didnt quite follow you on the rear set up.You got a rear Baer kit ?With one? What kind of E brake was it?Sounds like the one I want. Do you have any picks? With front calipers 2piston or 4?Thanks.

Robert,
Thats the feedback I'm looking for!  I've seen pictures of your setup before but that was a while ago and it looks like none of the photos are showing up right now.  More details would be great.

I checked some of those other websites but didn't really find what I'm looking for.

Thanks,
Dave

ps. and of course my personal project is basically on hold till I pick and install brakes/wheels/tires and see if I can find a 72-74 grill or if I'm just gonna clone an AAR... too many expensive decisions to make
