HBO's - The Pacific
« on: December 17, 2011 - 12:25:12 PM »
A question geared towards the historical marine I guess. I've been re-watching the series "The Pacific" by HBO. I'm familiar with the Garand, Springfield, Reising (sp?), Thompson, but what is the semi-auto rifle carried by many in that series that has a detachable box clip. I was kind of thinking M14 but I thought that came out after WWII.  :dunno:

Ya an M-1 carbine...... every one I've shot was horrible, couldn't hit the broad side of the barn! M-1 Garand was much better. M-14 even better!

He may be talking about the BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle) more the size of an M14. It was 30.06

I agree the M1 carbine was a terrible gun, had one a while back and got rid of it.

M1 carbine was definately a close quarters weapon you won't be knockin down any elk at 500 yrds with it. The wood barrel shield handguard has a tendancy to break while being fired. You can get a metal guard to replace it.

Thanks GranCuda.  The M1 it is. Seemed to have a Garand action but too small to be a garand. From the scenes in the series they didn't have to worry about shooting 500 yds.......

I've got a WWII era Postal Meter M1 Carbine and I honestly don't think its a bad rifle at all.  I agree it doesn't have the long distance accuracy or punch that an M1A1 has (I'm looking to pick one of those as well), but for what it is I think its great.  Just me I guess.

Postal Meter M1?  :dunno: Am I gonna learn some new slang? Nothing to do with 'Going Postal' ...is it? Good for ventilating mailboxes?

 Explains why bank robbers in Montreal  like them?  ( actualy that's the reason they are classed as restricted here!)
During the war lots of different manufactures made firearms. With the M1 Garand , international harvester, Springfeild armory, Harrington and Richardson, Singer sewing machine, etc...

I believe they also show a few of the rare M1941 Johnson semi-automatic 30.6 rifles as well.  They are a neat gun but I prefer my Garand as well.

M1 30 Carbine was an overgrown pistol round with all the attending deficiencies in a rifle. You're right that you didn't want to get shot with one, but then I feel that way about .22s! The M2 was a full auto version, but apparently they were extremely difficult to keep on target and defeated the whole purpose of the 30 Carbine in the first place. That was to have a  round that was small enough for an infantryman to carry enough ammo so that he didn't either herniate himself or run out easily. Anybody who's handled a military box of 30-06 can vouch for that. I've shot a Garand and prefer an FN FAL in .308, myself.

:iagree:  FN FAL ( and it variants, FN-C1) is my #1 favourite rifle hands down! Mind you the M14/M1A is fun to shot as well!

knda spendy though!! I have been eyeballing M-14 set-up's, they are still used as sniper rifles in the US Military.
