Need help with gas cap for the Flip-top
« on: December 19, 2011 - 12:46:17 PM »
I just installed my flip-top gas cap from PG classic, it look good, but now I need a small gas cap.

I google G771, but its not available localy.
I found some on eBaY.

But was wondering if anyone would have a part number for a current gas cap model that would fit and localy available.
I don't need to be a locking cap like the G771

I got one at my local jobber here in Canada. Can't remember the part # but I think it was from Stant? He had it on the shelf.  I'm not sure about 73 but for 70 there are 2 different caps, depends on if it had CA emmissions or not. One is sealed the other is not.
Find a oldtime automotive parts supplier....not Canadian tire!  :grinno:

This is surprising since there have been a few of these threads over the years. I was lucky in that my flip-top came with an inner gas cap. I don't have a recommendation, but besides the 70 with California emissions that Brad mentioned, the 71's were a non-vented cap to0.

I just ordered a non locking cap from Oreillys on line. NOt sure about canada, or even if it will fit. But they offered one.

It should be here soon. I'll report back.

Canadian Tire has them.

I saw the same gascap today in the Hardware Store for $18.99, it is listed as MGC-771 for a 1970 Challenger 440 with Flip Fuel Cap.

Made by:

It fits my 70 perfectly.

Question: Do the filler necks change over the years, and therefore what caps will actually fit, or is the only difference between years vented or non? I was under the impression that the necks themselves changed...

The unique problem I have is that mine is a 73 BUT I changed the gas tank out to a 70-style (no emissions) and would therefore need the non-vented cap. No?

What I really want is an original Mopar non-locking cap, but I'm not sure what would fit my neck correctly. :-\

The filler opening did change.  Not sure but I think 71 is the oddball size.  I have a mixture of parts on my 70 that I have no idea what they came from.

I tried for 3 months ordering different non-locking caps and never could find 1 that worked.  I gave up and bought the locking version.
It's more of a universal design and fit and works.

Info here, but doesn't help with non-locking

Yes the lugs on the cap and filler tube are different sizes.
Here is what I found.

The one I ordered came for my 70 Challenger. It was Murray Ultra fuel cap part #6032. It fits good. Non locking.
